Speaking to public radio as crunch talks on Iran's nuclear programme continued in Switzerland, Steinitz said Israel would seek to counter any threat through diplomacy and intelligence but "if we have no choice we have no choice... the military option is on the table."

Asked about possible US objections to Israeli military action, Steinitz pointed to Israel's unilateral attack against the Osirak nuclear reactor in Saddam Hussein's Iraq in 1981.

"This operation was not carried out in agreement with the United States," he said.

Steinitz, a close ally of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said the Israeli leader had left no doubt as to the country's response to nuclear-armed Iran.

"The prime minister has said clearly that Israel will not allow Iran to become a nuclear power," Steinitz said.

It may be too late for a "military option" now.
Israel has waited too long.

To effectively disable Iran's nuclear capabilities, it may be necessary to use "non-conventional" weapons in order to pierce the level of protection that Iran has established around a few of their sites (as in, deep underground).

Are the Israelis willing to do this?
Regardless of how they talk, I sense they will not resort to going nuclear.
Hopefully, I'll be proven wrong someday.

But I sense the meaning of the word "holocaust" is so burned into Jewish behavior and memory, that they will never take the offensive by starting one of their own. Defense? Of course, but a first strike? Jewish "guilt" will hold them back.

The time for Israel to act was in December of 2008. The Bush administration would have grumbled, perhaps even made threats, but ultimately would stand aside because G.W. Bush and those who worked for him knew what the Israelis faced -- as we had faced only seven years earlier.

But now?
He who hesitates is lost.

I would not be so quick to count Israel out.
