Two weeks ahead of his expected announcement that he is running for president, it's been reported that Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul will use an aircraft carrier as the backdrop when he reveals his presidential plans.
According to Politico, Paul — a Republican who took office in 2011 — will visit five states the week of April 7 when he enters the race. During his visit to South Carolina, the website reports Paul will announce his intention to run in front of the USS Yorktown in Charleston Harbor.
Paul's announcement tour will begin in Louisville in his home state, followed by stops in New Hampshire, South Carolina, Iowa, and Las Vegas.
The Daily Caller, meanwhile, points out that John Kerry announced he was running for president in 2003 in front of the same warship.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, also a Republican, became the first major candidate to enter the 2016 race for the White House on Monday. Others, including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Wisconsin Sen. Scott Walker, Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, and businessman Donald Trump, are also pondering running for the office.
Paul created a stir last month when he said "most [vaccines] ought to be voluntary."
He has also been critical of Hillary Clinton in the wake of a scandal caused by the revelation that she used a private email address and home-based server during her time as Secretary of State.
Two weeks ago, it was reported that Paul plans to open an office in Austin, Texas for his RANDPAC political committee.
