Evacuation at German U.S. Army base after WWII bomb found
The 500-pound bomb may have been a leftover from a U.S. bombing campaign in 1945.

GRAFENWOEHR, Germany, March 19 (UPI) -- Workers at a U.S. Army base in Germany were evacuated Thursday after a construction crew discovered an unexploded bomb from World War II, officials said.
Construction workers digging to build an elementary school at the Tower Barracks in Grafenwoehr found the bomb Thursday afternoon, NBC News reported, and about 200 people were evacuated.
The un-detonated bomb weighed about 500 pounds. About 4,500 military personnel and workers occupy the U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria. The evacuation was only applied to a small part of that population, a spokesperson said.
Specialists were called in to clear the device amid the evacuation, Stars and Stripes reported.
Construction crews had been checking the area for unexploded devices, because it is an area they are often found. The United States heavily bombed the area around Grafenwoehr, which is near Nuremburg, in April 1945 during World War II.
Last month, a 250-pound unexploded bomb from World War II was found near a German soccer stadium.
