Law Enforcement Shoots Unarmed White Guy And Shockingly Nobody Riots Or Protests

By Brian Anderson, March 19, 2015.

Well this doesn’t make a damn lick of sense. According to the TV racist law enforcement officers only shoot unarmed black men, but I found a story out of Pittsburgh where an unarmed white man was shot by the US Marshals no less. Interestingly enough, there are no reports of protesters, rioters, or looters.

CBS Pittsburgh reports that 30-year old Casey McDonald was serving probation for selling prescription drugs to an undercover cop. On parole, he walked away from a halfway house last year and for some reason the US Marshals decided they needed to bring in this low-level drug offender 15 months after he disappeared. They sent 7 marshals to McDonald’s girlfriend’s house in hopes of capturing him.

4 of the marshals entered the home, while 3 stayed outside. Before the entry team could locate McDonald, a gunshot was heard. The marshals rushed upstairs where they found McDonald with a gunshot wound to the shoulder. At first they thought the wound was self-inflicted, but no gun was found. As it turns out, one of the marshals outside of the house shot McDonald through the window. Seriously, this happened.

There’s one more little detail that makes this seem even more pointless:

[The investigating officer] said police don’t expect to file any criminal charges against McDonald or his girlfriend in the incident.

Let’s do a quick recap here: McDonald was a non-violent offender whose big crime was leaving a halfway house. The US Marshals, of all law enforcement agencies, sent 7 officers after this low-level/low-risk man. He was unarmed. He didn’t resist arrest. He didn’t attack the arresting officers. One of the marshals shot him through a window for no apparent reason. And after all this, they aren’t even charging him with a crime.

Neither the US Marshals nor the local police can explain why McDonald was shot, but the AP gives us this, which seems like a clue:

The marshal suspected of firing the shot was evaluated for drugs and alcohol at a hospital afterward.

A US Marshal spokesperson says this is standard procedure following officer-involved shootings, but I’ve never heard of it. To me it seems like they thought the marshal had to be drunk or high to shoot an unarmed man, who wasn’t doing anything particularly suspicious, through a window on a parole violation case.

Actually, there is speculation that the marshal shot McDonald because he believed the parole violator was trying to escape out of the window. Even if this were the case, and there’s no evidence to support this, shooting an unarmed person for climbing out of a window is not a good reason to use deadly force. There was no weapon present and no one’s life was in eminent danger. Not to mention how dangerous it was for the marshal to fire into the house knowing that 4 of his brothers were in there trying to make an arrest.

For the record, McDonald was airlifted to a Pittsburgh-area hospital and is expected to live.

Unlike a lot of cases getting national headlines, McDonald didn’t attack officers, resist arrest, or have a violent history. This truly was an unjustified shooting. Unfortunately for him, he happens to be white so he gets no protests, no hashtags, no Justice Department investigations, and no Al Sharpton rallies.

The only thing McDonald has going for him is that he wasn’t killed. Well, that and a pretty good lawsuit against the US Marshals.
