Quote
... Right now the state has only about one year of water supply left in its reservoirs, and our strategic backup supply, groundwater, is rapidly disappearing. California has no contingency plan for a persistent drought like this one (let alone a 20-plus-year mega-drought), except, apparently, staying in emergency mode and praying for rain ...

It is very serious. And yet here on the coast of Orange County, there is opposition by "environmentalists" to a desalinization plant, using proven technology.

In the past these same "environmentalist" groups have made outrageous claims, which later prove to be entirely false.

Recall a story from a couple of years ago in California.

The gist of it was a couple decided to not use so much water - being environmentally conscious and all. Took out the lawn and did a rather pretty dry garden in the front of the house. Nice job, anyone would be impressed by it.

They got huge fines from both the city and the HOA.

I think they even tried to paint the lawn green and got hit for that as well.

I wonder if the paint had lead in it?   :smokin:

From here on the ground, in the area, I can verify that one method of conserving water is artificial grass, and the products are surprisingly realistic looking.

They are, but the emphasis is on "looking" - they still look a little "off" when set next to a real lawn.  There's a house on the next block over that has artificial grass instead of a lawn, and it just looks odd because it looks almost, but not quite, like real grass.

Plastic flowers, shrubs and trees are next. Then a cardboard mercedes to place in the driveway to complete the look

LOL. Sad statement on a shallow society. Things don't need to be real as long as we have our illusions.

That reminds me of the movie Brazil.  Or perhaps Bladerunner.

I could get carried away with this theme. Paper mache pets and inflatable kids for the 'family' look, styrofoam building shapes for the mega mansion look, etc. We can make your life appear to be whatever you want. Special packages available for entire neighborhoods. The Joneses will think you are living the dream....

Indeed.  Like so many of the Philip Dick novels.
