Gunman kills 5 in suspected 'terror attack' in Mali nightclub

By Amy R. Connolly   |   March 7, 2015 at 7:52 AM

BAMAKO, Mali, March 7 (UPI) -- Five people, including a French and Belgian citizen, were killed in a hand-grenade and machine-gun attack in a Mali nightclub Saturday.
Two Malian men, one possibly a police officer, were also killed at La Terrasse in the suspected terror attack. Authorities said no one has claimed responsibility for the shooting. It is the first in Mali's capital since the Malian army began fighting al-Qaida-linked militants in 2012.

French President Francois Hollande called the attack "cowardly." French foreign minister Laurent Fabius said the attack would strengthen the country's resolve to "fight terrorism in all its forms." France has forces in West Africa as part of a push against al-Qaida.

Belgium's foreign minister Didier Reynders also said the attack was related to terrorism.

"I condemn once again this cowardly dreadful terror which has struck. According to the information it may be in any case a terrorist attack," he said.
