Bin Laden Papers Reveal Iranian Support for al-Qaida

Files released by the Obama administration that were recovered from Osama bin Laden's compound in Pakistan indicate that al-Qaida had dealings with Iran, the Weekly Standard reported.
The newly released documents, which were offered this week as evidence in a trial of a terrorist suspect, also show that in the months leading up to his death, bin Laden was involved in orchestrating terrorist activities, in contrast to the Obama administration's claim that he was sidelined and retired.
More than 1 million documents and files were captured by the Navy SEALs who raided bin Laden's compound and killed him in May 2011. The Obama administration has released very few of the documents to date, the Standard said.
The newly released files reveal that a top al-Qaida operative, Younis al-Mauritani, asked bin Laden's permission to relocate to Iran in June 2010, where he would be based to plot attacks around the world.
The Standard previously reported that al-Mauritani and some of the members associated with his plots received safe haven in Iran after planned attacks were thwarted.
In the memo to bin Laden, a top al-Qaida manager wrote, "Sheikh Yunis is ready to move and travel."
It adds, "The destination, in principle, is Iran, and he has with him 6 to 8 brothers that he chose. I told him we are waiting for final complete confirmation from you to move, and agree on this destination (Iran). His plan is: stay around three months in Iran to train the brothers there then start moving them and distributing them in the world for their missions and specialties. He explained those to you in his report and plan."
Other information recovered from bin Laden's home indicates that the terrorist organization and Iran also had some differences. Iran detained a number of top al-Qaida leaders and members of bin Laden's family.
Al-Qaida forced Iran to release some of its people by kidnapping an Iranian diplomat in Pakistan, according to the Standard.
"Although Iran and al Qaeda have had significant differences, there is much intelligence showing that the two continue to collude," the Standard said.
At other points during the Obama administration, the Treasury and State Departments have exposed a formerly "secret deal" between the Iranian regime and al-Qaida, according to the Standard. The arrangement allowed the terrorist group a base from which to dispatch terrorists around the world.
Other documents showed that al-Qaida had a strong presence in Afghanistan at the time of the 2010 memo, which is at odds with past assessments by U.S. officials that the group had a minimal presence in that country, the Standard reported.
