White House: Israel distorts U.S. position in Iran negotiations

The White House slams what it calls a continued Israeli practice of 'cherry-picking' and leaking information out of context.

REUTERS - The White House said on Wednesday that Israeli officials had mischaracterized U.S. negotiations on Iran's nuclear program and criticized what it called "a continued practice of cherry-picking" and leaking information out of context.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the Obama administration is mindful of the need to keep the negotiations private and accused Israel of distorting the U.S. position.

"There's no question that some of the things that the Israelis have said in characterizing our negotiating position have not been accurate," Earnest said at a news briefing. "There's no question about that."

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki, speaking to reporters on Wednesday, also accused Israel of "selective sharing of information" but declined to say what information had been cherry-picked.

"I think it is safe to say not everything you are hearing from the Israeli government is an accurate reflection of the details of the talks," Psaki said.

The negotiations between the United States, Russia, China, France, Germany, Britain and Iran have reached a crucial stage, as the countries previously agreed to deliver a basic framework agreement by the end of March and a final agreement due by June 30.

Earnest would not discuss details of U.S.-Israeli consultations on Iran nuclear negotiations.

"But I think it is fair to say that the United States is mindful of the need to not negotiate in public and ensure that information that's discussed in the negotiating table is not taken out of context and publicized in a way that distorts the negotiating position of the United States and our allies," he said.

The White House has begun to limit the scope, quality and depth of the information it shares with Jerusalem about the progress of the talks with Iran about its nuclear program, senior Israeli officials involved in the issue have told Haaretz.

Thankfully I'm being rescued by a meeting.  Perhaps when I get back he'll be off my TV and out of my life for an hour or so.

I'm guessing Obama's snub isn't polling well, so instead of pulling back, this administration does what it does best.  Lash out with even more anger, and further the divisions created by their actions.  I've pretty much tuned out anything coming from the White House, because they are in melt down mode, and clearly there is no leadership at this point.

It's basically every man or woman for themselves, and outside of the spectacle we're witnessing, there is nothing I can do about it, so I'm checked out on the WH.

So am I!  When you know what they are going to say before they say it there is no longer any reason to listen to a word of it.

Why is the White House complaining?

Israel reports what it knows. The WH doesn't keep them in the loop. Any distortions are purely down to the Worm and his minions.

Barry talks smack about Christians, FOX News and Israel.

Obama wants a full blown formal alliance between America and Iran.

Obama would like nothing more than for America to become a satellite State of Iran.

Obama would like nothing more than American armed forces fighting side by side against, NOT ISIS, Obama wants to fight Israel, with all of his MB, Hamas, Iran, butt buddies along for the ride.

Obama is a stupid little strutting Muslim pigeon. We are at point where we can no longer pretend that he isn't.

This stupid little fool is going to get us all killed. We have to stop 'pretending' that Obama is something that he is not and never was. We have to accept that Obama accepts radical Islam as a valid political movement.

Everyone is scratching their head and saying, "What the hell is Obama doing?", when the answer is simple and right in front of our face.

Accepting the fact that, Yes, you voted a Muslim radical into office, is screwing them all up. They would rather play make-believe pretend land that to accept that they screwed up.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.

IMO, they're just continuing their campaign against Netanyahu and Israel.

Since they can't get Bibi to cancel his speech appearance, the only arrow they have is to head-off the criticism and complaints they know he'll bring up in front of Congress.

And it has about the same effect as Republicans 'asking' "What War on Women?"

None.

US Withholding Details of Iran Nuke Talks From Israel
Wednesday, February 18, 2015 04:41 PM

By: Matthew Lee

The Obama administration said Wednesday it is withholding from Israel some sensitive details of its nuclear negotiations with Iran because it is worried that Israeli government officials have leaked information to try to scuttle the talks — and will continue to do so.

In extraordinary admissions that reflect increasingly strained ties between the U.S. and Israel, the White House and State Department said they were not sharing everything from the negotiations with the Israelis and complained that Israeli officials had misrepresented what they had been told in the past. Meanwhile, senior U.S. officials privately blamed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu himself for "changing the dynamic" of previously robust information-sharing by politicizing it.

The comments came as a late March deadline to forge the outline of an Iran nuclear deal looms and U.S. and Iranian negotiators prepare for a new round of talks later this week in Geneva, Switzerland.

Netanyahu has angered the White House with his open opposition to a deal he believes threatens Israel's existence, and by accepting a Republican invitation to address Congress about Iran in early March without consulting the White House, a breach of diplomatic protocol.

White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that sharing all details of the negotiations with governments that are not at the table would complicate efforts to get a deal that would prevent Iran from developing a nuclear weapon in exchange for sanctions relief. The talks are being held among the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council — Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States — along with Germany and Iran.

"The United States is not going to be in a position of negotiating this agreement in public, particularly when we see that there is a continued practice of cherry-picking specific pieces of information and using them out of context to distort the negotiating position of the United States," Earnest said when asked whether the U.S. was limiting the amount of information it shared with Israel about the talks.

"So, there is an obligation when you're participating in these kinds of negotiations to ensure that those consultations and that those negotiations are carried out in good faith. And that means giving negotiators the room and the space to negotiate," he said.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki went further, confirming that one of the steps the administration takes to ensure that "classified negotiating details stay behind closed doors" is to withhold them from Israel. She also directly blamed Israel for mischaracterizing the talks.

"I think it's safe to say that not everything you're hearing from the Israeli government is an accurate reflection of the details of the talks," she said. "There's a selective sharing of information."

But while Earnest and Psaki said the limitations on information sharing were longstanding, U.S. officials more directly involved in the talks said the decision to withhold the most sensitive details of the negotiations dated back only several weeks.

Those officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly, said the administration believes Netanyahu, who is facing a March 17 election at home, has made a political decision to try to destroy the negotiations rather than merely insist on a good deal.

This, they said, had led to politically motivated leaks from Israeli officials and made it impossible to continue to share all details of the talks, particularly as Netanyahu has not backed down on his vow to argue against a nuclear deal when he speaks to Congress.

Neither Earnest nor Psaki would discuss the details of the leaks, but senior U.S. officials have expressed consternation with reports in the Israeli media as well as by The Associated Press about the number of centrifuges Iran might be able to keep under a potential agreement. Centrifuges are used to enrich uranium, and diplomats familiar with the talks have said Iran may be allowed to keep more of them in exchange for other concessions under current proposals that are on the table.

Netanyahu has insisted that Iran, whose top officials have sworn to obliterate Israel, should not be allowed to enrich any uranium. The U.S. and its partners say that stance is untenable because Iran would never accept it.

As the talks have progressed, Netanyahu's opposition to an agreement has increased over what he believes to be extreme concessions made to Iran that would leave it as a threshold nuclear weapons power and a direct threat to Israel's existence.

The White House and the State Department maintained that the U.S. will not leave Israel threatened. They also insisted that Israel has not been completely cut out of the loop and that overall security cooperation with the Jewish state remains strong.

Administration officials and some lawmakers have said they will not attend Netanyahu's speech.

Bibi has genuine worry about the state of the Middle East since His Imperial Majesty Barack Hussein ascended to the throne.
