Egyptian warplanes have targeted weapon storage sites and training camps in neighbouring Libya, a spokesman for the Armed Forces General Command announced.

An official statement confirmed the attack was "to avenge the bloodshed and to seek retribution from the killers".

"Let those far and near know that Egyptians have a shield that protects them," it added.

Egyptian television broadcast footage of fighter jets taking off for the aerial assault against Islamic State, also referred to as IS, ISIS and ISIL.

This marks the first time Cairo has publicly acknowledged taking military action in neighbouring Libya.

The airstrike comes one day after Islamic State released a video purporting to show the mass beheading of Egyptian hostages.

The sickening five-minute clip, released yesterday, shows the beheading of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians, handcuffed and dressed in orange jumpsuits.

Entitled "A Message Signed With Blood To The Nation Of The Cross", the video shows the hostages being marched along a rocky beach, which IS has claimed is by the Mediterranean Sea.

The gruesome killings raise the possibility that Islamic State – which controls a third of Syria and Iraq – is now just 500miles from the southern tip of Italy.
