One person is dead after 200 bullets were fired into a cafe in Copenhagen in what some are claiming is an attack on the life of a controversial Swedish cartoonist who drew the Prophet Mohammed as a dog.

Two people, including a uniformed officer, were taken away from Krudttoenden cafe on stretchers this afternoon after the shots were fired.

It is thought three people were injured in the attack, which one organiser has claimed is a deliberate attempt on the life of Lars Vilks, the controversial Swedish cartoonist talking at the event.

The cafe had been hosting a debate on freedom of speech titled Art, Blasphemy and Freedom of Expression, featuring a number of controversial speakers.

Kudos to the cafe for hosting that debate.  It is an issue that is way past time to be debated.

Random shooting having no connection to any imaginary group of people that right-wing extremists like to incorrectly label Islamic terrorists.

News from closer to the incident. Says they had not caught the two suspects, but have their vehicle.

"Update, 6.18pm: The civilian killed in Saturday's shooting attack was a 40-year-old Danish citizen, police have said. Police added that they have founded the suspected getaway vehicle but two suspects are still at large."

The Danish authorities will probably get to the bottom of this, but if they cannot they can call on Henning Mankell's Detective "Wallendar" from nearby across the straits in Ystad, Sweden.

An important question: Did the shooters call out any "folks" by name?

It is reported that the event was centered on Lars Vilks, a Swedish cartoonist, who drew provocative versions of Mad Mo.

When shooting began Vilks was taken out the back way. There was special security for him at the event.

More random violence near a synagogue

Injuries in second Copenhagen shooting

Several people have been injured after shots were fired near a synagogue in Copenhagen, Danish police say.

One person was reportedly hit in the head, and two police officers had arm and leg injuries. The attacker is believed to have fled.

It is not clear whether the shooting is connected to an earlier attack on a cafe in the city.

There, a gunman killed one person and injured three at a free speech debate attended by a Swedish cartoonist.

Cartoonist Lars Vilks, who has faced death threats over his caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad, was unhurt.

Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt described that attack as a "politically motivated" act of terrorism.

Police launched a massive manhunt after the first shooting.

They released photographs showing the alleged attacker apparently wearing a purple balaclava and thick puffer jacket.

The three injured were police officers.

Update, Sunday evening: Police now report that the gunman was 22 and born in Denmark. His name is Omar Abdel Hamid El-Hussein. He was already known by the police because of his "violent past".

So....IOW....known criminals with violent paths don't carry illegal weapons?

Was this guy at the wrong place at the right time?  Or was he indeed the same shooter?

Was he ever out of line of sight of the authorities?  I understand they came upon him at a bus stop.
