Oops: Pentagon Loses $400 Million Worth Of Military Equipment in Yemen

By Robert Gehl, February 7, 2015.

The Pentagon has lost track of the $400 million arsenal it has supplied to the Yemeni government since 2006. All of it.

Despite Barack Obama’s support of the Yemeni security apparatus, the situation continues to spiral out of control. In exchange for the hundreds of millions of dollars to fight terrorist insurgents, Yemeni officials permitted the Pentagon to conduct drone strikes and other counter-terrorism operations in the country.

But as the government falls apart, the Pentagon now has no idea how to track the helicopters, weapons, night-vision gear, transport aircraft and just about anything else they gave or “leased” out.

Despite the battle in Yemen – now almost ten years old – the country remains a terrorist haven. Evacuations of U.S. personnel are always “imminent” and U.S. Naval warships are constantly stationed in nearby waters. Terrorist continue to seize military equipment – like the armored vehicle pictured above.

The defense official, who would not speak to the Guardian on the record, said the US would seek to regain its monitoring ability over Yemen’s US-provided arsenal as quickly as it could.

“We continue to monitor the situation in Yemen closely and, as the security environment permits, we will continue working with the Government of Yemen to ensure equipment granted or sold to the Government of Yemen by the United States remains accounted for,” the official said.

Yeah … good luck with that.
