Plans for London commuters to bounce into work on the world’s longest urban trampoline appear to have lost their spring.

Boris Johnson said a “fatwah” had been served on the eye-catching Bounceway project by London’s Transport Commissioner Sir Peter Hendy.

Opponents on the London Assembly are now accusing the Mayor of quietly ditching a proposal that was both celebrated and ridiculed in equal measure.

“It does not seem to me at first blush to serve any immediate transport purpose,” the Mayor told London Assembly members.

Bounceway was meant to be trialled along with nine other projects as part of Transport for London’s (TfL) £1.8 million Future Streets Incubator scheme.

A corridor of trampoline, surrounded by soft surfacing to protect over-enthusiastic bouncers, it was said to promote good health and fun on the journey to work.

But Sir Peter reportedly ruled out paying for it from his transport budget. Mr Johnson distanced himself from the idea when challenged at a budget meeting by saying it had not been “escalated” to his desk: “I was very disappointed to see the fatwah issued against the trampoline by Sir Peter.”
