FBI Director Says Number Of Police Officers Killed In 2014 Is ‘Shocking’

By Brian Carey, January 4, 2015.

Speaking at the funeral of murdered New York City Police Officer Wenjian Liu, FBI Director James Comey said that the number of police officers killed last year is “shocking.”

“One hundred and fifteen were killed last year,” he said. “That’s a shocking increase from 2013. I don’t understand evil and I cannot try.”

Liu was killed, execution style, with fellow police officer Rafael Ramos on Dec. 20. The shooter, Ismaaiyl Brinsley, claimed on social media that he was acting in retaliation for the the deaths of two unarmed black males at the hands of police officers. Brinsley killed himself shortly after committing the murders.

The FBI report to which Comey referred shows that 115 to 120 officers were killed in the line of duty last year. That includes about 50 of them killed by firearm.

By contrast, only 76 law enforcement officers were killed in 2013 while on duty. Hence, the description of the increase as “shocking.”

Comey also said that he came to Liu’s service to “honor a peace maker” and that Americans need to “make something good out of the tragedy.”
