http://ulstermanbooks.com/north-korea-declared-war-united-states/I’ve watched the Sony Studios cyber-attack story with increasing interest in recent days. Initially, (and predictably) the media coverage was intent upon releasing private emails of studio execs with near breathless headlines of embarrassing opinions about Hollywood figures like Angelina Jolie, Leonardo Dicaprio, and fellow celebrity, Barack Obama among others. Finally though, it appears the media is realizing the true story of what has happened that goes far beyond another hack Hollywood film – North Korea has declared war on the United States.
For years there have been warnings issued by intelligence operatives regarding the potential of a cyber attack upon the United States. The Sony Studios “hack” was just that – a cyber attack that has resulted in direct terrorist threats against any who dare to show the film The Interview, a mid-tier Hollywood comedy involving the North Korean government.
The prospective showing of that film motivated North Korea to hack into Sony Studios, release emails, and threaten Americans with death if they were to see the film. I care nothing about what some studio executives said about certain Hollywood actors or the President of the United States. I do care though, as we all should, about a foreign nation hacking into corporations and then sharing information as a means of intimidation.
Make no mistake, what the North Koreans have done is being noted by every major enemy of America throughout the world. To date, North Korea has done so with near impunity. Is Barack Obama skulking, his feelings hurt by the words of some in Hollywood whom he thought loved him entirely and without question? I pose that as a serious question, because the White House has said almost nothing regarding the matter, a matter that is a cyber attack accompanied by terrorist threats – both of which are acts of war against the United States of America.
North Korea is a nuclear power with a large (albeit aging) military that should not be underestimated as it is more than capable of creating considerable regional conflict impacting allies such as South Korea and Japan. The more direct threat from North Korea to the United States has just played out though – a cyber war. It should not be deemed inconceivable that what happened to Sony Studios (what is now being called the most damaging cyber attack ever upon an American corporation) could not happen to this country’s power grid, defense systems, air control, etc.
We’re at war. North Korea has fired the first cyber shot.
How will the United States respond?
