All the Rev’s enablers

Americans will today witness a bizarre spectacle: a march on Washington led by a rabble-rousing, riot-inciting, flame-throwing serial defamer. And tax cheat.

In the wake of the Eric Garner and Michael Brown deaths, the Rev. Al Sharpton will lead a protest in the capital — à la Martin Luther King Jr.’s 1963 march — to call attention to what he and his minions claim is a plague of police brutality.

Yet as President Obama himself says, “we can’t equate what is happening now to what was happening 50 years ago.” And Rev. Sharpton is no Rev. King.

Yes, some bad cops use excessive force. But if this is the nationwide scourge it’s made out to be, why is the rally against it led by a man with such a sordid record?

Has everyone forgotten the Tawana Brawley hoax, the Freddie’s Fashion Mart massacre, the Crown Heights riots?

In fact, folks from Mayor de Blasio to Obama have elevated the Rev in hopes of riding his coattails. Obama’s had Sharpton to the White House 61 times, National Review’s reports. De Blasio’s practically made him co-mayor of New York.

Sharpton gets huge press coverage, a TV show and space for op-ed columns. Rich admirers paid his Brawley-hoax penalties. The IRS closes its eyes to his tax debts. And our local pols are all too happy to echo his cop-bashing.

Plainly our police are tired of being undermined by those who should have their backs. Now their union is fighting back.

On Friday, the PBA posted a form that it’s asking every cop to sign and return to their union rep. The relevant line says: “I, [fill in name], as a New York City police officer, request that Mayor Bill de Blasio and City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito refrain from attending my funeral services in the event I am killed in the line of duty.”

Now, that’s a protest.
