It’s often said that the last two years of a lame duck president’s term in office are spent in legacy building — trying to secure a place in the history books. Considering what people think Barack Obama has done to race relations in America, this president’s legacy on that score appears to be in deep trouble.
A number of recent polls show that the American public believes race relations have worsened considerably during the time Obama has been in the White House.
After the nation’s first black president was sworn in for his first term, Americans had a bright outlook on race relations, as CBS News notes in describing how opinions have changed dramatically:
Sixty-six percent of Americans in April 2009 said race relations were generally good.
More than five years later, the latest CBS News poll shows, views on race relations have dimmed dramatically.
Just 45 percent say race relations are generally good, the lowest figure in CBS News polling since 1997.
Another poll, this one conducted for Fox News, shows similar feelings among Americans — even African Americans — disappointed over Obama’s impact on race relations:
…voters are nearly three times as likely to say race relations have gotten worse (62 percent) rather than better (19 percent) since Barack Obama became president. Another 17 percent say things are the same.
Majorities of white (65 percent), black (55 percent) and Hispanic voters (56 percent) say race relations have gotten worse under Obama.
One of America’s black sheriffs — a Wisconsin lawman who has been outspoken in his criticism of Obama as a “divide and conquer” president — spoke with Megyn Kelly on her Fox News show Thursday night.
Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke said that Obama has been “destructive for America.”
“He built this racial divide. It was a wound that had been healing for a number of years, a number of decades […] and he reopened it with his divisive politics.”
