A woman gave evidence in a foreign tongue for an hour before anyone noticed.
The witness was repeatedly told to speak slower and move back from the microphone.
Coupled with reportedly poor acoustics in court, those present assumed proceedings were simply hard to hear.
Christiana Kyemenu-Caiquo, a court clerk, eventually realised the witness was speaking Krio, a dialect native to Sierra Leone where both she and the woman hail from.
Judge Nicholas Madge then swore Kyemenu-Caiqu in to interpret for the witness.
However it proved of little use, as every translated answer turned out to mean, ‘I can’t remember.’
The witness was giving evidence against Gilbert Deya, 61, a preacher who faces four allegations of rape, one of attempted rape, two of sexual assault and one of battery.
