Panel: No evidence Chris Christie involved in Bridgegate

A New Jersey joint legislative panel could not determine whether Gov. Chris Christie was involved in last year’s lane closures, according to its its interim report released Thursday.

“At present, there is no conclusive evidence as to whether Governor Chris Christie was or was not aware of the lane closures either in advance of their implementation or contemporaneously as they were occurring,” the report said, according to NJ.com.

The report added that there was no “conclusive evidence” Christie had involvement in “implementing or directing the lane closures” to the George Washington Bridge, which occurred Sept. 9-13 and led to major traffic jams in the town of Fort Lee, N.J.

While the report did not tie Christie to the traffic scandal, his former aide, Bridget Anne Kelly, may have violated state law, the outlet said. The report also criticized Christie’s office, saying it “responded very slowly and passively” to the closures and the possible impact it had on drivers.

The report said Kelly, who was ultimately fired in January for the lane closures, and Port Authority official David Wildstein, who resigned that December, were motivated “in part by political considerations.”
