C 3.6
My last name comes down from my great grandfather, and was changed twice by him during his life.
Immigrants did change their names, to seem more like those in the country they chose to join.
He was probably a bit of a scoundrel, and in the end disappeared or was run out town by the men. Or so the story goes.
Nevertheless his children in America turned out fine. So did his children, back in Sweden. However probably due to no credit for him, since he effectively deserted two families, along with the Swedish army, or so the story goes.
His name was patronymic, and his was the first generation which "froze" it in both the old country, and in the new.
Other surnames are based on occupations (miller, weaver) and others on places.
So I place little meaning in names. I don't say that to offend any of you that do.
