N. Korea said to be building new gulag to hide prisoners increasingly in global spotlight

SEOUL — North Korea is building a new concentration camp in a remote northeastern area in an apparent bid to relocate political prisoners now being eyed by spy satellites.

The prisoners have been detained at the notorious Yodok camp which has come to figure prominently in the new global focus on North Korean human rights abuses, an intelligence source here said.

“A camp in Mount Mantap, North Hamgyong Province is being expanded into a giant concentration camp,” the source said. “North Korea is believed to be closing down the Yodok camp by relocating its inmates to the new camp,” he said.

The move seems aimed at responding to international criticisms for human rights violations at the Yodok camp.
