FIRST PHOTOS From ISIS Air Force Base in Syria
Posted by Jim Hoft on Sunday, October 26, 2014, 5:50 PM

In late August the ISIS terror group captured SA-16 Manpads, AIM-9 Sidewinder missiles and MiG-21B jets after they raided the Raqqa airbase in Syria.

ISIS added MiG-21B jets to their arsenal in August.

Last week the Islamists released a short video that reportedly shows an “ISIS fighter jet” flying over Aleppo, Syria.

The video has over 400,000 views.

Um - they are scrap?

So they're just trying to make it look like they have an air force?

Pretty much. They might have a couple that can still take off and land - once - but the ones pictured have been stripped or mothballed.

. They would not last against FA/18 jet in a head to head combat. A simple MANPAD would take them out. They are second generation fighters while F/A-18 is a fourth generation plane

In this case - not a chance, I totally agree.

In the hands of a good pilot though, you'd be surprised. We saw it in action in Vietnam. Little, slow, and relatively incapable MIGs were flying circles around the US Phantoms (State of the art at the time). They were simply too maneuverable to be shot down from the air using A2A missiles, and indirectly gave rise to the newer generations of smart missiles. In the end, the Phantom pilots started sticking gum on their canopy as a gunsight!
