Green Beret shot in Afghanistan dies at Landstuhl

EGLIN AFB — A 30-year-old 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) soldier died in a hospital in Germany after being shot in Afghanistan last month.
Army Sgt. 1st Class Andrew Weathers was severely wounded in a gun battle in Helmand Province on Sept. 28, 2014. He died on Sept. 30, 2014 at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany.
Weathers, a special forces medic with the 2nd Battalion, had been living in Crestview.
“From the beginning of his time with 7th Group, Sgt. Weathers was the consummate teammate," said Col. Robert Kirila, the group's deputy commander. "As a Special Forces medical sergeant, Weathers was critical to the well-being of his team and those he mentored. The group mourns the loss of such a great leader and we will support his family in every way possible.”
Weathers joined the Army in 2003. In 2010, he volunteered for Special Forces training, earning his Green Beret. He joined the 7th Group in 2012.
Prior to his 7th Group service, Weathers deployed once to Afghanistan and once to Iraq, according to the Army.
Weathers is the 43rd 7th Group soldier killed in action since Sept. 11, 2001. At least one other 7th Group soldier was injured in the battle.
He is survived by his parents, Michael and Jere Weathers of Pollock, La., and a brother, Dusten, and sister, Carrie.
The 7th Group plans to hold a memorial service in the coming weeks.
