From the article:
[[ Presbyterian's chief clinical officer, Dr Dan Varga, said all staff had followed CDC recommended precautions – 'gown, glove, mask and shield' – while treating Mr Duncan.
And on Monday the CDC said that a critical moment may have come when Miss Pham took off her equipment. ]]

What is not mentioned is that perhaps the existing "protocols" for protective equipment when treating Ebola patients are woefully inadequate.

At least some of he pictures I've seen of medical people "suited up" for Ebola have shown areas of exposed skin. In addition, what precautions are being taken for breathing? I'm not seeing medical personnel "on protected air" (that is, air supplied from a source other than the room they're working in.

Refer to this post which is an excerpt from Richard Preston's "The Hot Zone":
===
"This is a slice of lung tissue. A monkey that was exposed through the lungs. See how the virus bubbles up in the lung? It's Ebola Zaire."

I could see individual cells, and some of them were swollen with dark specks.
"We'll go to higher magnification."

The cells got bigger. The dark specks became angular, shadowy blobs. The blobs were bursting out of the cells, like something hatching.

"Those are big, fat bricks," she said.

They were Ebola crystalloids bursting out of the lungs. The lungs were popping Ebola directly into the air. My scalp crawled and I felt suddenly like a civilian who had seen something that maybe civilians should not see.

"These lungs are very hot," she said in a matter-of-face voice.

"You see those bricks budding directly into the air spaces of the lung?

When you cough, this stuff comes up your throat in your sputum. That's why you don't want someone who has Ebola coughing in your face."
===
Note: fuller excerpt here:

In the case above, "bricks" of Ebola virus were bursting right out of a monkey's lung tissue, into the air inside its lungs (which would then be exhaled).

This is why the doctors and technicians who work with Ebola at the Army's Ft. Detrick (MD) facility must use SPACE SUITS with a full air supply to enter areas "hot" with Ebola. It's considered biohazard "level 4" and ordinary protective gear (the kind we've seen in almost all the pics of medical personnel handling Ebola patients) is insufficient (or at least thought so by those in the know in the Army) to provide protection.

So next time you read that this nurse (or those medics who are going to be contracting it from future patients) "violated protocols", better re-examine the premise of such statements.

What if "the protocols" are wrong....??

Not to make a political issue out of this terrible situation but this is the very difference between liberalism and conservatism.  Until a good, scientific understanding is obtained about this awful disease, a conservative approach is called for, i. e.:  assume you can be infected just by looking at someone who is infected, assume it's everywhere, and take every known precaution to protect against it and then some.  The stupid a$$ liberals assume existing protocols and practices are sufficient.  No!  Suit up with everything ya got if you're treating someone with Ebola.  Stop all flights--excepting medical personnel and supplies--out of hot zones.  Certainly, don't make flimsy excuses for why you think we shouldn't stop commercial flights.  (I'm looking at you, Dr. Frieden.)

Don't bring any level of rationality into Ebola discussions.

While there is still time for it to appear, every day after day 8 the odds go down rapidly.  No doubt they've had blood tests which would likely show if they were infected, even if symptoms hadn't appeared.

The good thing to come out of this is it will make everyone up the level of protection.  Ideally, they'll use Level A suits.

Updated at 6:44 p.m.: Dallas nurse Nina Pham received a blood transfusion from another Ebola patient as part of her treatment, her family's priest Father Jim Khoi said.

Though isolated for treatment, the young nurse's spirits are high and she is doing relatively well so far, said Khoi, the priest at Our Lady of Fatima.

"She's doing well," said Khoi, who was updated on her condition by Pham's mom. "She's very comfortable. She's very supported now. She knows that everybody knew to pray for her especially in this difficult time."

A Samaritan's Purse spokesman said that at the request of the hospital, Dr. Kent Brantly went to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas on Sunday to donate plasma.

This is the third time Brantly has done so since recovering from Ebola. He also donated to NBC News freelance cameraman Ashoka Mukpo and aid worker Dr. Rick Sacra, who left the Nebraska Medical Center virus-free in September.

The spokesman said Brantly also offered to give blood to Thomas Eric Duncan but was not a match.

Treating Ebola with blood transfusions from recovered patients is experimental. The theory is that plasma in survivors would contain antibodies that could protect against the disease.

The Texan nurse diagnosed with Ebola has received a blood transfusion from survivor Dr Kent Brantly, reports claim.

It is the third time Dr Brantly has donated blood to Ebola victims after medics discovered he had the same blood type as previous patient Dr Nick Sacra and NBC cameraman Ashoka Mukpo, who is still being treated.

Incredibly, nurse Nina Pham, 26, has also matched with Brantly and today received a transfusion of his blood in a move that doctors believe could save her life.

Pham has been in quarantine since Friday after catching the disease from 'patient zero' Thomas Eric Duncan - the man who brought the deadly virus to America.

Brantly is believed to have traveled to Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, where Pham worked, to make the donation on Sunday night.

Today, Pham's condition was described as 'clinically stable'.

Those who have survived Ebola have antibodies in their blood which can help new sufferers beat the disease.

Dr Kent Brantly was flown back from Liberia to the U.S. after contracting Ebola during his missionary work for Samaritan's Purse.

He survived after receiving a dose of the experimental serum Z-Mapp and round-the-clock care at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

On September 10, Dr Brantly donated blood to a fellow doctor, Dr Rick Sacra, who also contracted Ebola during his work in West Africa and survived the disease.

Last Tuesday, he was on a road trip from Indiana to Texas when he received a call from Ashoka Mukpo's medical center in Nebraska telling him his blood type matched Mukpo’s.

He also offered his blood to Thomas Eric Duncan but their blood types didn't match.

Within minutes, he stopped off at the Community Blood Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and his donation was flown to Omaha.

Pham was diagnosed after admitting herself to hospital on Friday when her temperature spiked – one of the first symptoms of the deadly virus.

A blood test confirmed she had the disease and she is now being treated in an isolation ward.

The Emergency Room where she was admitted was cleared and decontaminated.

Nina Pham's uncle confirmed to MailOnline that she is the nurse who has contracted Ebola while treating patient zero Thomas Eric Duncan.

Jason Nguyen told MailOnline: 'Nina has contracted Ebola, she is my niece. Her mother called me on Saturday and told me; 'Nina has caught Ebola.'

'My sister is very upset, we all are. She said she was going up to the hospital in Dallas and I haven't heard from her since. I've tried to call but I can't get through. It's very shocking. I don't know any of the details, only what I hear on the news. It's frightening.'

He added: 'Nina is very hard working. She is always up at the hospital in Dallas.'

A friend added: 'You always hear it on the news, but you don’t expect someone you know so well to have it.'

HazChem teams spent the weekend fumigating her apartment in Dallas while health officials have ordered an investigation into how she contracted the disease.

Her beloved King Charles Spaniel will not be destroyed and is being quarantined, Dallas mayor Mike Rawlings has assured.

Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Protection (CDC) Dr Thomas Frieden has blamed a 'breach in protocol' of infection control lead Miss Pham to catch Ebola.

Mr Duncan arrived in Texas from Liberia on September 20. He began showing symptoms of Ebola three days after his arrival and was admitted to Texas Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday 28. He died on Wednesday October 8.

Presbyterian's chief clinical officer, Dr Dan Varga, said all staff had followed CDC recommended precautions – 'gown, glove, mask and shield' – while treating Mr Duncan.

And on Monday the CDC said that a critical moment may have come when Miss Pham took off her equipment.

Ebola victims suffer chronic diarrhea and bleeding. But blood and feces from an Ebola patient are considered the most infectious bodily fluids.

Mr Duncan also underwent two surgical procedures in a bid to keep him alive but which are particularly high-risk for transmitting the virus – kidney dialysis and intubation to help him to breathe – due to the spread of blood and saliva.

Nurses' leader Bonnie Castillo has criticized the CDC for blaming the nurse for the spread of the disease.

Ms Castillo, of the National Nurses United, said: 'You don't scapegoat and blame when you have a disease outbreak. We have a system failure. That is what we have to correct.'

In response to the criticism, Frieden clarified his comments to say that he did not mean it was an error on Miss Pham's part that led to the 'breach of protocol.'

The CDC said on Monday it has launched a wholesale review of the procedures and equipment used by healthcare workers.

Dr Frieden added that the case 'substantially' changes how medical staff approach the control of the virus, adding that: 'We have to rethink how we address Ebola control, because even a single infection is unacceptable.'

Friends and well-wishers have paid tribute to Miss Pham and praised her as a big-hearted, compassionate nurse dedicated to caring for other.

Raised in Vietnamese family in Fort Worth, she graduated from Texas Christian University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

She obtained her nursing license in August 2010 and recently qualified as a critical care nurse.

A friend told the Dallas Morning News: 'When she got accepted into nursing school she was really excited. Her mom would tell how it's really hard and a bunch of her friends quit doing it because it was so stressful. But she was like, "This is what I want to do".'

A devout Christian she regularly attends mass at the Lady of Fatima Church.

Tom Ha, who taught her bible class, told the paper: 'The family is very dedicated and go out of their way to help people. I expect, with the big heart she has, she went beyond what she was supposed to do to help anyone in need.'

Hung Le, who is president and counselor at Our Lady of Fatima, said parishioners are uniting in prayer for Miss Pham.

He said: 'Our most important concern as a church is to help the family as they are coping with this. As a parish, we are praying for them.'

Ha, who taught the woman in Bible classes, said he and others are translating health information into Vietnamese to help others learn about the illness.

'People are more worried for the family than for themselves, but some have questions because they don’t really understand what it is or how it is transmitted.'

The World Health Organization today called the Ebola outbreak 'the most severe, acute health emergency seen in modern times'.

It added that economic disruption can be curbed if people are educated so they don't make any irrational moves to dodge infection.

WHO Director-General Margaret Chan, citing World Bank figures, said 90 per cent of economic costs of any outbreak 'come from irrational and disorganised efforts of the public to avoid infection.'

'We are seeing, right now, how this virus can disrupt economies and societies around the world,' she said, but added that adequately educating the public was a 'good defense strategy' and would allow governments to prevent economic disruptions.

Ebola screening of passengers arriving from three West African countries began at New York's JFK airport on Saturday.

Medical teams equipped with temperature guns and questionnaires are monitoring arrivals from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone – countries at the centre of the Ebola outbreak.

Screening at Newark Liberty, Washington Dulles, Chicago O’Hare and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta will begin later this week.

From what I've read about this nurse, she is a very nice person - I hope this transfusion works for her and the other guy.  It is an amazing thing that their blood types happened to match Dr. Brantly's blood type!

Ebola Nurse Boyfriend Reportedly Admitted With Ebola Symptoms

An email sent out to the Alcon staff by its CEO reportedly said that the ebola nurse’s boyfriend was admitted into hospital with “Ebola-like symptoms.”

Gotnews.com has received word from two different Alcon employees, both of whom asked not to be identified.

Alcon’s U.S. headquarters are in Fort Worth, Texas. It is an opthomological pharmaceutical company.

Requests for comment from Alcon were not returned.

Oh no.  How many more will get this from that one patient?  And isn't it strange that Mr. Duncan's family members don't seem to be showing symptoms - or if they are - they're not reporting it?

I am becoming more and more convinced that ground zero being 'Red State', Texas, was NOT a coincidence.

The elections are 'only' three weeks away.  Talk about a fly in the ointment....

How will Rick Perry deal with this?  Will the Feds be invading with troops?  Will the entire county be quarantined?

Me too DC!  I've had a strong feeling that there was going to be a big "October Surprise" - well, even my strong imagination never came up with anything like this - but the timing........I think there's something to it.  Texas is ground-zero!

Its not a conspiracy. People are not washing their hands after touching soiled objects. I carry a hand sanitizer before and after touching objects. When you are in a hospital setting you have to be more hygienic. Do not let people sneeze in your face. After you use the restroom, you have to wash your hands. Its basic cleanliness 101. In California, people who prepare your food must wear gloves.

Agree!  I mean, what the hell is it going to take?  He knows he can get away with anything right now - because it's right before the election!  And the cowards in Congress are too afraid of even their own shadows right now - afraid to say anything wrong.

And I was at the Grassy Knoll. The Republicans are going to win so everyone should take a chill pill.

The problem as I see it Trigger - is that the GOP probably will squeak a win - but they're going to get the blame for all the crap coming down the road for the next two years - and it's going to ruin it for them in 2016.  In some ways, it would be better if they lost - then maybe Americans will be sick to freakin' death of these people by 2016.

Don't tread on me.   8888madkitty

We told you Trump would win - bigly!

Everyone is blaming Obama right now, especially his weekend golf tours.
