Prosecutor Argues Oklahoma Beheader is Racist, Not Jihadist

Usually prosecutors and the media would avoid attributing a racial motive in a crime like this, but now they would rather go the racial route than the Jihadist route.
Mashburn said Vaughan’s human resources department had suspended Nolen earlier Thursday after another co-worker, Traci Johnson, had complained she had had an altercation with Nolen “about him not liking white people.”
While the FBI is investigating, and while he believed Nolen may have been using Arabic terms during the attack, Mashburn said the attack seemed to be tied more to the complaints against him.
“It had more to do with race rather than trying to convert people,” Mashburn said.
The Arabic terms are unspecified, but odds are that Allah Akbar was one of them.
Racism and Islam are not contradictory motives here, as the prosecutor insists. Racism helped fuel interest in Islam in the US. Based on his use of the name Yisrael and Judah tattoo, Alton Nolen appeared to have drifted at some point into the often racist Black Hebrew movement. It’s surprising that he didn’t end up in the Nation of Islam.
Nolen would have seen the women he killed as enemies on account of race and religion. His Facebook posts, his beheading and his use of Arabic terms frames the attack in religious terms. Nolen saw himself as going on a Jihad. The Jihad may have been triggered by racial animosity, but Nolen would have framed the racial animosity in religious terms.
