The Islamic terrorist organization Boko Haram has declared a new Islamic caliphate in northeaster Nigeria, modeled after the caliphate being created by ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Because of the sheer monstrosity of Boko Haram, tens of thousands of people – Christians in particular – are fleeing the region.

Catholic Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme of Maiduguri says, “in areas whereBoko Haram is active Christians are fleeing by the thousands. ” He reported that at least 90,000 Catholics are now displaced by the Islamist rebels who are challenging the sovereignty of the Nigerian government.

Father Patrick Tor Alumuku is the Social Communications officer in the Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Nigeria. He is reporting that Boko Haram is involved in some savage brutality against Christians in the region that they hold.

boko haram“Boko Haram is determined to eliminate every sign of Christian presence and many churches have been destroyed or torched. Last week in a village in the area ofMaiduguri, Boko Haram took over the parish for its local headquarters,” said Father Alumuku.

Attorney and human rights activist Emmanuel Ogebe told Spero News that, “Our local partner's female cousin is amongst those killed by Boko Haram indicating that they are killing Christian women too which is different from the takeover of Gwoza. In Gwoza, they beheaded Christian men and married off their wives when they declared an Islamic caliphate two weeks ago. According to Boko Haram's own video, Abubakar Shekau claims he killed 1,000 Christians on that day. This has not been reported in the media as far as we can tell but is contained in his YouTube statement. We are investigating this but since he controls the town it is impossible to tell. If true this is the worst single day massacre of Christians anywhere in contemporary history.”

Boko Haram is as disgusting as their Muslim comrades in ISIS – they care nothing for human life and love only death and destruction. No one in Nigeria, or anywhere else in the world for that matter, will be safe until Boko Haram is utterly destroyed.

Mike....I recall early on in 2009, how you 'calmed' me down off the ledge...assuring me that our system of checks and balances would hinder Obama in carrying out any 'outrageous' acts toward our fellow citizens, etc..  And I still appreciate that.

I'm going to utilize that tact here, if you don't mind. 

The Middle East has been like Hatfield vs McCoys for over a thousand years.  While we can hope and pray that Christians living in that region get to relative safety, IMO, there's a snowball's chance in hell that Europe...let alone the United States will ever experience wholesale slaughter of Christians.

DC, I recall our discussions from back then.  For me it's not just the Christians being slaughtered over there, but how much we've failed so far in our war on terror.  I voted no in the survey here.  If Obama can't articulate both a strategy and the goals, then Congress should not give approval to trickle down warfare.  Having said that, I continue to believe that if we are going to fight terrorists, the best place to do so is in their home town, not mine or yours.  You are right, Christians in the US and Western Europe will not experience wholesale slaughter, but death by a thousand cuts isn't out of the realm of possibility. 

In addition, with the likelihood of the growth of terrorism in that region including the possible acquisition of nukes and/or other WMD in addition to oil,  sooner or later we will be drawn in, like it or not.  In the late 1930s Americans believed that Germany would not and could not attack the US, and therefore we should stay home and watch from a distance.  It doesn't work.  And today, the world is substantially smaller.

But as I said, we've made many mistakes in our war on terror including Iraq and Afghanistan.  I'm not for repeating those, nor am I for jumping every time the bad guys take another town in Iraq or Syria.  And I'm definitely against simply using our manpower and weapons to poke them in the eye.  If we go in, we do it with clear goals, and use whatever force is necessary.  Because yes, sooner or later, they'll go after us here...and the Europeans are even much more vulnerable.
