Why does this always have to happen @ night?
Usually the time right around sunset is when the atmosphere is at its most unstable, after hours upon hours of heating at the ground level. It creates a ripe environment for buoyancy, and the slightest amount of lift will create massive convection... and thus thunderstorms.

Tornado warning canceled in Missouri. Severe thunderstorm warning still in effect. Storm has not yet reached St. Louis, but it should be there very soon.

Storms seem to be intensifying in far southern Illinois, western Kentucky, SE Missouri. There is some tornado potential in the storm about to hit Poplar Bluff.
