Mozilla CEO Resigns After Furor over Same-Sex Marriage

(AP) Mozilla co-founder Brendan Eich is stepping down as CEO after protests of his support of a gay marriage ban in California.

The Mountain View-based nonprofit maker of the Firefox browser had promoted him last week.

At issue was Eich's $1,000 donation in 2008 to the campaign to pass California's Proposition 8, a constitutional amendment that outlawed same-sex marriages. The ban was overturned when the U.S. Supreme Court last year left in place a lower-court ruling striking down the ballot measure.

Mozilla Chairwoman Mitchell Baker apologized for the company's actions in an open letter online Thursday. She says Eich is stepping down for the company's sake.

She says Mozilla believes in equality and freedom of speech. It is still discussing what is next for its leadership.

She says Mozilla believes in equality and freedom of speech.

And yet you caved to those who would suppress speech, and penalized someone for having had their say.

You can't have it both ways, and right now you're lying.

I think I'm going to stop using Firefox, as painful as that might be.

Back to using IE.  I'd use Opera but it doesn't play well with some sites.  I really don't want to have to go to Google Chrome - they already own enough of the world.

How does Mozilla make its money?

The dirty old way - it has a for-profit wholly-owned subsidiary that gets paid by Google to make Google the default search engine for the browser and for click-throughs on ads placed on the ensuing search page.  From the wiki article:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mozilla_Corporation#Establishment

Thanks, I didn't see anything in the articles about how much it was costing the person who resigned.

Some people are more equal than others. Just don't disagree with them.

depending on how good his attorneys were when he signed on, he might walk away with a pretty chunk of change.

My university account doesn't work with IE so I have to use Firefox.  And IE also won't open my gmail.

How do I get around that without using Firefox?

As much as I hate to say it, Chrome is the only other real option.

If you're using Gmail, you might as well use Chrome, since that's what most Google products are designed to use.

Opera, by the way, is switching to the same browser engine as Chrome (and Safari), so the compatibility issues that used to plague that browser won't be as much of an issue anymore.

Go with Chrome.  I use gmail, and I have an android smartphone, so after a little reflection - and a distinct desire to stop using FF - I installed Chrome.  It's a pretty flash browser, and it seamlessly imported all of my bookmarks, saved passwords, and history from FF - even put the correct bookmarks on the bar just under the address field.

IE is just too klunky.

Wow.  A quadruple response!  Thanks, fellas.  ^-^

(I already have Chrome, but never have used it.  I'm not exactly a techie.  More like a Luddite!)
