He refused to endorse Sen. John Cornyn (R-Tex.) during the primary, but once it was over, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) singled him out for congratulations.
"Congratulations to every Republican who won the primary last night. Three, in particular, deserve special mention," Cruz wrote Wednesday on Facebook, before mentioning Attorney General Greg Abbott (a candidate for governor), Cornyn, and George P. Bush (candidate for land commissioner).
"John is a friend, and a good man. He's earned considerable respect in the Senate. We have not agreed on everything, but we have agreed on the vast majority of issues. Together, we're a strong and effective team for Texas," Cruz wrote, later adding that he is "proud" to endorse Cornyn.
As Cornyn faced the threat of a tea party challenge in the summer, Cruz declined to endorse the second-ranking Senate Republican. It was seen as a kick in the teeth to Cornyn; not only does Cornyn represent the same state as Cruz, but Cruz is the vice chair of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, an incumbent protection organization.
Cornyn won the GOP nomination easily on Tuesday. Despite chatter in early 2013 that he might face a formidable tea party challenger, he faced only gadfly candidates. Politico reported that Cruz left Cornyn a congratulatory voice mail late Tuesday.
Cruz is staying out of contested Senate primaries featuring incumbents. But he made local endorsements in state-level races in Texas.
