Advocates of Minimum Wages Treat Reality as If It Is Optional

by Don Boudreaux on January 21, 2019

Here’s a letter to the New York Times:

    Dear Editor:

Making the case for a minimum wage of $33 per hour in New York City, Ginia Bellafante thinks it sufficient to calculate the minimum pay required for a single parent with two school-age children to sustain a certain lifestyle in NYC (“The $15 Minimum Wage Is Here. Why We Need $33 an Hour.” Jan. 4).

Wages, however, are not determined by how much pay workers ‘need’; wages are determined by how much value workers produce. Government requirements that workers be paid an amount greater than the value of what they produce throw workers who cannot produce that amount of value out of work. Astonishingly, Ms. Bellafante barely acknowledges this objection to minimum wages.

"Advocates of Minimum Wages Treat Reality as If It Is Optional"

Don, you dummy, don' you unnerstand....?
Leftists/democrat-communists believe that "reality" IS "optional" -- to be twisted into any shape they need to fit their ideology.

Conservatives believe that you have to adapt to the reality. Progressives believe that reality should adapt to their beliefs
I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them.

Any time I hear some liberal urging that the minimum wage be increased to $15/hr, I respond with, "Don't stop there.  Why not raise it to $100/hr?  Wouldn't that be even better?"  They always go silent with this puzzled look on their faces wanting it to be true. Yet thinking that there has to be something wrong with that idea without being able to figure out why.

If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

-Dwight Eisenhower-

"The [U.S.] Constitution is a limitation on the government, not on private individuals ... it does not prescribe the conduct of private individuals, only the conduct of the government ... it is not a charter for government power, but a charter of the citizen's protection against the government."

Well stated.

Good observation.
