Unless Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy intervenes militarily on or after an upcoming vote on independence to be held by Catalonia, this 2,397-square-mile region nestled in Spain’s northeastern corner may soon become its own country.
On Oct. 1, Catalonia’s regional government intends “to hold an illegal referendum on leaving Spain, and declare independence for Catalonia if they win,” reported the BBC. Why a vote? Because its citizens resent Spain’s central government in Madrid, which they feel “takes much more than it gives back.” Sound familiar?
