Trump didn't need a megaphone. He only used it because he couldn't resist not using it. His constant need for attention drove him to use Twitter.
His base loved him doing that, at least seven or eight million other voters not so much.
You seem to forget that in the Reagan years, at least, while there was still a leftist bias in the MSM, it was neither as prominent nor as vicious as it is today. Back then, even leftist late night people could be funny, not just nasty. There were a host of words you couldn't say on television. The Clintons hadn't come along yet. Socialism and homosexuality might have had a mention in the upper grades in 'that health class' in high school but were not 'celebrated' at the primary school level, and drag queens reading books to preschoolers just would not have happened. When Reagan gave a press conference, the media were civil, and they generally reported the facts of the conference or simply televised it.
Twitter served two purposes for the POTUS, at least that I could see. First, it gave him a way to reach people unfiltered by a hostile media.
Second, he used it to bait his opposition, who really were nasty, and let them show their true colors. That baiting took some of the passive out of their usual passive aggressive and they went full on hostile. Angry people make mistakes, and anyone who had any sense of fairness could see this, through the media's use of transparent pejoratives and misquoting/editing and simply telling you the POTUS said things he did not.
Just like the swarm of lies that led to BLM and riots in the streets, losses in the billions of dollars across the country, and a host of other abuses of their pulpits, the MSM went on full on attack against America, Americans, and even Trump. It has become so commonplace, that if you can stand twenty minutes of any of the ABCNNBCBS "news" shows, you will get a lethal dose of Leftist toxicity, unless you are addicted to that brain jamming dreck.
Now, I get it, folks who do not like Trump are hostile to the idea that he could reach the American People directly, at least until the Zuckerbergs and others of this world decided they can censor the President of the United States.
What does that tell you about who thinks they are running this country, if they decide what you can and cannot see and read?

You see, the real murderous totalitarian bastards are on the Left, no matter how nice they want you to believe they are. They've proven it in the past century, and continue to do so today. You can quibble about how they tell you to get on your knees as they line up the shot, but that story will not end well.
Some times you have to fight fire with fire, and while some solutions seem unpleasant, the result of not using those solutions is far more so. Hatred blinds people. My dislike for Communists isn't out of hate. I see them as a lethal threat to my life, like a pack of rabid dogs. They have gone full out using a mild and "Plausibly deniable" bioweapon and lies to panic the people of the world, denied the efficacy of treatments that could have saved tens of thousands of lives, all to use against one man and every free government on the planet.
(Trump didn't kill all those people but the deranged wannabe totalitarians who have been full on hate for him (and you and me, unless you are one of them) did.
