Robert De Niro says coronavirus decimated his finances   :03:

By Priscilla DeGregory

Robert De Niro says he’s running out of dinero.

The coronavirus dealt a massive financial blow to the actor’s finances he revealed in court, as his estranged wife asked for an emergency order to raise her monthly American Express card credit limit from $50,000 to $100,000.

The “Irishman” actor appeared by phone on a Skype call in his Manhattan divorce case with Grace Hightower as her lawyer told a judge that De Niro unfairly cut her monthly Am-Ex allowance from $100,000 to $50,000 and said she and their children had been banned from an upstate compound where De Niro is staying during the pandemic.

But lawyers for De Niro said he cut Hightower’s credit card limit because he’s taken a huge financial hit as the restaurant chain Nobu and Greenwich Hotel, both of which he has stakes in, have been closed or partially closed for months with barely any business.

De Niro’s lawyer, Caroline Krauss, told the judge that Nobu lost $3 million in April and another $1.87 million in May. And he had to pay investors $500,000 on a capital call, which he borrowed money from his business partners to make, “because he doesn’t have the cash,” Krauss said.

Luxury restaurant chain backed by Robert De Niro received over a dozen PPP loans

Megan Henney   |   FOXBusiness   |   July 7

A chain of luxury restaurants and boutique hotels co-owned by actor Robert De Niro received at least 14 loans through the taxpayer-funded Paycheck Protection Program, according to government filings released Monday.

The aid, part of the federal government's $670 billion efforts to staunch the economic pain of the coronavirus pandemic and help small businesses avert mass layoffs, was worth at least $11.4 million and as much as $27.7 million, the data shows. The chain received relief for properties across the country, from Malibu, California to New York City.

I used to keep a book of national people who were disgusting. The first entry
was that Nano Nano guy. Wonderful I don't recall his name. That book started
to fill rapidly with Hollywood actors. The main reason was they thought
their views of life, what to do, what to think, and who to vote for had to be
said.

Eventually, I stopped recording actors, as ESPN former athletes began the
same dribble. I don't support any of them. The channel changes, the movie
theater is out of bounds and if I am somewhere where I don't control the
content, I leave.

DeNiro is a slug. He made plenty of money before he unleashed his inner
bleep. (Terrible having banned words. It cut the mood of my phrase
... unleashed his inner ass ...)

He could quit complaining about others and look to that guy in the mirror.

That's just the AMEX limit.  Sure she is getting (and demanding) a helluva lot more.

My credit card limit is nowhere near $50,000 and the only times I've come close to my credit limit is when making a major purchase (e.g. a large appliance).

Many women, when they divorce, are bitter.  They want to live the high life and they expect hubby to pay through the nose as revenge.  I don't blame DeNiro for objecting to becoming an ATM for his ex.

I get the feeling that if she was good with money, they might still be together.

De Niro and his former wife, Grace Hightower, entered a 'divorce' prenup agreement in 2004, seven years into their marriage.  They already had a 'marriage' prenup agreement in place, which the new 'divorce' prenup amended.  First, there are lots of things covered under that agreement that will never see the light of day in the press.  Secondly, in any marriage-divorce situation, there is an emotional attachment to almost everything, which is the source of irrational behavior among the parties involved.

There is a mechanism in place which allows De Niro to reduce payments in times of financial shortfall, which De Niro is now acting upon.  For now, the judge is allowing a 50% reduction in monthly payments, but also ordered that De Niro put up money for a summer residence for Hightower and kids since their regular summer residence is being denied.

From a regular person's standpoint, it is hard to generate any sympathy for people with that much money.  But in relative terms, if someone with a budget of $100,000/month suddenly finds themselves only receiving $50,000/month, that leaves a $50,000 shortfall in their monthly expenses.  This would be very difficult for any person to handle.

In 2004, Hightower gave De Niro an out, and De Niro is now taking it.  That's on her.  She agreed to it.  She should have tied in net worth, but she didn't.  And as long as De Niro can keep his annual income under $15 million, her payments get reduced.

De Niro may be a POS, but this is about a legally binding contract both parties signed off on.
If a political party does not have its foundation in the determination to advance a cause that is right and that is moral, then it is not a political party; it is merely a conspiracy to seize power.

@Hoodat

Thanks for the info.  I did a little reading on Grace Hightower and it seems she has money of her own.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hightower

If so, then I think she can raise her limit on the Amex and pay her own credit card bills.

And as to this:

Quote
But in relative terms, if someone with a budget of $100,000/month suddenly finds themselves only receiving $50,000/month, that leaves a $50,000 shortfall in their monthly expenses.  This would be very difficult for any person to handle.

Well, then Miz Hightower should do like many of us have done when we experienced some adversity like job loss or illness.  Cut expenses.  What the H is she spending $50,000+ per month on anyway?

There is a Black credit card which has no limit.
You can buy a mansion on an island, or a yacht, or a Bentley, anything it doesn't matter.
You and I will likely never see this card.
Came close to it once years ago while dealing real estate, but no cigar.
I knew people who had it but that's all.
