President Donald Trump claimed Thursday he “was not happy” with the crowd at his campaign rally in North Carolina the previous evening for chanting “send her back,” after he had goaded the audience with a fiery attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.).

"I was not happy with it. I disagree with it. But again, I didn't say that. They did. But I disagree with it," Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that he “started speaking very quickly” in an attempt to silence the rally attendees.

"It was quite a chant, and I felt a little bit badly about it," Trump said, later hailing the crowd size inside the "packed arena" at Greenville's East Carolina University and boasting of the "tremendous support" and "great energy" enjoyed by the Republican Party.

Trump was put in a no win situation by a group of supporters, too bad. He's smart to walk away from the "send her back" chant, but you can bet the perpetually offended won't let up in their criticism.

I kinda agree - he didn't start the chant. But he shoulda took charge at the time.

Anyway he can walk it back now while continuing to make Omar an unsympathetic figure, which would be exceedingly easy. By the time he's done swing voters will be chanting it too.

This is someone who was a Democrat and ‘very pro-choice’ a decade ago. He can also, as president, say we’re a third world country, compared to Saudi Arabia and China, because of our infrastructure.    :shrug:

Now I'm really confused.   Didn't Trump tweet that part about 'go back' to where they came from....and that if they don't like America they can leave.  It's no wonder the Trump supporters took the chant there.  I mean...

If you haven’t understood Trump by now, allow me to re-cap. Every move he makes is modulated. “How can I get the best outcome,” ie. no tie to the offensive chant, and get re-elected so as to accomplish his conservative agenda of America first) given the challenge—a hostile media bent on destroying him. Every interaction he has with the press is a negotiation. Probably relying on gut instinct and experience knowing people.

He knows his supporters and knows also that this minor concession won’t move his supporters one way or the other...

Okay, now let’s move on to the next outrage in 3...2... Oh, look, the sunrise!
