Say Goodbye to Texas
by Jim Goad
June 24, 2019

I always liked the idea of Texas—a massive, arrogant, sun-scorched, red-blooded homeland for impenitent cattle rustlers who provided a cultural counterpoint to the sniffly, snobby classes of the Eastern seaboard. Back when America was all about expansion rather than retreat, Texas was far more American than anything you could scrape up from either coastline.

The only glimpse I ever had of this forgotten Texas was in the early 70s while my family was on a road trip from Philly to Phoenix, and all I remember is blazing heat, hundreds of bugs squashed on our car window, and my dad gleefully singing along to Jerry Reed’s “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot” on the car radio. I hardly remember anything else about Texas back then—it didn’t seem like the scenery started catching my eye until we were already halfway through New Mexico—but the heat and the bugs and the raucous country music seemed quintessentially Texan.

My subsequent trips through Texas—and they’re almost always through, never with the intent of staying an hour longer than I needed to—give me the impression it’s the world’s most overdeveloped shopping mall. The endless parking lot that is Dallas-Fort Worth is possibly the nation’s ugliest metro area, maybe even worse than Phoenix. Texas these days seems uniquely devoid of culture in only the way that a place which is the process of shifting permanently from one culture to another can seem. Then again, the Texas that seemed alluring and iconic and more truly American than the rest of America combined—at least in films such as The Searchers and The Last Picture Show —was already dead by the time each of those films was released.

In the early 1970s, Texas was around 70% non-Hispanic white and roughly 20% Hispanic. If current trends continue, within the next ten years it will be about 35% white and 40% Hispanic. Texans used to brag that “everything is bigger in Texas,” but if current demographic trends continue, the state is getting shorter and shorter.

Don't blame the messenger for the message.

But "the message" here is clear and irrefutable:
Texas will not "remain a red state" for too many years longer.
Soon it will begin to change to purple. Was not the recent election between Ted Cruz and the dirt eater sufficient evidence of that?
And after that...how much longer... until it topples over into the blue...?

Addendum:
Sadly, it looks like this image really was a harbinger of "things to come"... (sigh):

There was a study a few years ago that indicated 2nd generation Hispanics tend to be very conservative, so there is hope that as the Hispanic ranks grow rapidly, they evolve to being conservative in time.  Not a whole lot different than whites in the USA.  How many were first registered Democrats, and are now staunch conservatives?

I was raised in a union working class household.  I spent the first 30 years of my voting life a registered Democrat, but on national elections, tended to vote Republican.  Now, I can honestly say I will never vote for another Democommie.  That's right, the Democrat Party has gone communist, and the semantics of Democratic Socialist just does not ring true.....Sanders is a communist, and so are the others that spout the nonsense they sing.

I hope Trump is right when he says we will never be socialist.  I do not have his confidence because the young are singing this nonsense, and I do not see them getting more conservative as they get older.  They just remain dumb as a box of rocks.

You do realize that muzzie scum suckers are blending in with the Mexicans to cross the border?

Have trouble with 2 things right off the bat before I go any farther:

(1)
I hardly remember anything else about Texas back then—it didn’t seem like the scenery started catching my eye until we were already halfway through New Mexico—but the heat and the bugs and the raucous country music seemed quintessentially Texan.

I am presuming he didn't go through the hill country to make a statement like that.

(2)
My subsequent trips through Texas—and they’re almost always through, never with the intent of staying an hour longer than I needed to—give me the impression it’s the world’s most overdeveloped shopping mall. The endless parking lot that is Dallas-Fort Worth is possibly the nation’s ugliest metro area, maybe even worse than Phoenix.

To say places like Grapevine and downtown Fort Worth are worse than Phoenix tells me this guy got off a plane, onto a freeway, and back on a plane again.

Now that he's offended my delicate sensibilities, I don't think he's intelligent/ambitious enough to spend the time to research what he is talking about.
Fair enough, I won't be wasting my time reading the rest of the article.

Texas is home I believe to the original La Raza Unida, they are pretty radical but with that said, Hispanics are already something like 28% Republican, something, not as dire as one might make it out to be. You have prominent Hispanic politicians like Marco Cruz and Ted Rubio. Whether one likes it or not, the best solution I can see is to appeal to Hispanics, not by pandering but just by showing them, a lot of values they cherish are the same ones all Americans do.  Not the sickening pandering of Democrats of offering them amnesty or whatever, which a lot of them don't go in for.

Yes, there appears that many Hispanics are on public assistance, at this point, I'd say this is an issue in some states but not as much in others. I don't know how this breaks down n TX, it seems to be a phenomenon in California at the least.

Again, voter turn out is pivotal, so many elections can be determined on voter turnout, voter registration, the Roy Moore election is but one example, voters turned out to vote for Doug Jones.

States high on voter turnout are still at near the 70% level, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Colorado. I think California is near 60%. Any state where as much as 40% of the voters, registered or just of voting age, have some serious questions I think.  And I think even "high voter" turnout states still have 30% sitting out. That's no small number either.

Well, for a real-world experience (vis-a-vis a "study"), how's that workin' out for California?

It's all how they're educated.  Period.

These current young children are going straight into American schools.  (That's a thread all by itself)

They're being taught that the US was Founded upon the broken backs of minorities, whose home country was economically exploited for the USA's gain.

Imagine these kids' attitudes in ten years?

If this shit isn't stopped pronto, White People are going to be like India's 'Untouchables'.

I would think, I would not be sure  but I'd believe that a lot of Hispanics and blacks too, may look at the situation and say "we've been treated pretty well here in Texas".

Another thing, the Hispanic vote is not monolithic, New Mexico has shameful, disgraceful abortion laws, I think that has come about because of the dominance of the Democratic party, supported largely by Hispanics, the thing is, a lot of Hispanics in New Mexico have been there since, indeed, the original Conquista of Spain. They've always voted Democratic, they continue to. That is at least, the way it is in Albuquerque and North. Take Santa Fe, it's older than when the pilgrims came.

Also, it does seem Florida besides the obvious, Cuban influence, is quite a bit different per its Hispanic voting bloc.

I think Hispanics have not had good voter turnout in TX, they probably did for Beto and that election was close. But that's just one election.

It just shows, people will have to fight for the votes.

For the record, New Mexico may have lenient abortion laws but thankfully, not a markedly high abortion rate from what I remember. It's got some of that so-called "abortion tourism" though. Anyone wishing to read more on this should go to Operation Rescue's website.

@Fishrrman

And this shouldn't come as a shock to anyone. I have been hearing about the creation of Atlzan for at least 20 years. They were VERY vocal about it in the 70's.

Frankly,I'm surprised it hasn't already happened. I guess most illegals coming in think Texas is too close to the border,so they flee north.

Odd how these people hate life in Mexico so much they are willing to risk their lives to come here, and then immediately try to re-create Mexico here, ain't it?

We have zip codes...walking distance to the District of Columbia boundary lines that have STOP signs in Spanish.

Of course, being in Maryland, it serves as an Ant Farm for the rest of the country.  IOW, it's a one-Party State...forever Blue.

Montgomery County used to be one of the Top 3 richest counties in the Nation.  Their schools were second to none.  Their ranking today should nauseate any Baby Boomer.

In my own backyard, they approved "an addition" to Seneca Valley HS, in Germantown, MD.  OMG!!  It's more than doubled in size!

I'll guaran-freakin-tee you more than 50% of the student body is 1st generation immigrant.  Where in the hell are they coming from???     9999hair out0000

Better yet, TX needs to stop the ILLEGALS coming in period and even better than that the U.S. needs to declare a moratorium on ALL migration to this country and start massive DEPORTATION!

@GrouchoTex

We are in Flower Mound.  Takes us 15/20 minutes to get to our Catholic church in Grapevine.  Don't mess with Grapevine or Flower Mound.

Texas is so big, you can go to a city or out in the country fast and country goes on forever.  I have friends who live in the hill country, west of Austin.  The hill country is damn right Bubba Texas Country.  Be careful on those roads, as the Deer have the right-of-way.  The worst/most terrible thing I saw at my friend's place outside Bandera on a bunch of acres and high on a hill, was GRASSHOPPERS TEN INCHES LONG covering up a whole side of their house.  I was immediately frightened as I had never seen such grasshoppers.  I wanted away from them.  Snakes I know, those huge beasts on the house I did not know.

Heat starts the middle/last of June and lasts into October.  Then, we have a mild winter with a few days of overnight freezing temps, maybe three of those through the winter.

Groucho, I'm with you.

California liberals tend not to come to Texas.  They don't like Texas.  They tend to go north from California.  Some tech people come to the Austin area due to tech companies there.

Here is what the State Republican Party did in years I was working with them.  They made an effort to open more Republican Headquarter offices in Spanish areas.  If you open an office, they will come.

Yes, they are, but then their families had to overcome the same great hardships that Texas Anglos had to overcome.  It's a different culture.

It happened in Washington.  California moved in.  Now its Freeattle.
AG William Barr: "I'm recused from that matter because one of the law firms that represented Epstein long ago was a firm that I subsequently joined for a period of time."

Alexander Acosta Labor Secretary resigned under pressure concerning his "sweetheart deal" with Jeffrey Epstein.  He was under consideration for AG after Sessions was removed, but was forced to resign instead.
