Stephen Miller pressuring Trump officials amid immigration shakeups
The White House hard-liner is driving a more aggressive immigration approach.
Politico, Apr 8, 2019

As President Donald Trump roils the capital over illegal immigration, his influential aide Stephen Miller is playing a more aggressive behind-the-scenes role in a wider administration shakeup.

Frustrated by the lack of headway on a signature Trump campaign issue, the senior White House adviser has been arguing for personnel changes to bring in more like-minded hardliners, according to three people familiar with the situation — including the ouster of a key immigration official at the Department of Homeland Security, whose secretary, Kirstjen Nielsen, announced Sunday that she is resigning.

[...]

“He’s actively trying to put in place people who have very different points of view than the current leadership within the agencies,” said a former DHS official familiar with Miller’s efforts. “His idea is basically [to] clean house.”

Miller also appears to have played a role in Trump’s surprise move on Friday to withdraw his nomination of Vitiello, whom he had moved to install permanently, saying he wanted to take the agency in a “tougher direction."

Trump aide Stephen Miller ‘going to clean house’ as immigration policy hardens

It comes as White House advisor Stephen Miller takes a more prominent role in implementing an immigration policy he has largely orchestrated behind the scenes since Trump took office.

In addition to urging the president to push out Nielsen, Miller, a long-time immigration hardliner, is thought to have other administration officials in his sights.

On Monday, Trump made the surprise announcement that U.S. Secret Service Director Randolph “Tex” Alles would be replaced. Both Nielsen and Alles were closely associated with former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, who resigned last year after falling out of favor with Trump.

On Thursday night, Trump blindsided many administration officials by abruptly withdrawing the nomination of a career official, Ronald D. Vitiello, to head Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

“Miller’s going to clean house,” said a former White House official, calling Alles “Kelly’s best friend.” The former official, who did not want to be identified speaking about his one-time colleagues, predicted more departures. “He’s firing all of Kelly’s people.”

At the center of Trump's Homeland chaos, Stephen Miller is the lone survivor

WASHINGTON — Amid the chaos, Stephen Miller is in charge now.

The iconoclastic hard-line young conservative policy aide to President Donald Trump, hated by the left, and celebrated by the extreme right, is the obvious winner in the power struggle that led to Kirstjen Nielsen's ouster Sunday night as Homeland Security secretary.

He's unofficially taking the reins of border security amid a purge at the department that has also seen Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles removed from his job and Trump's pick to head the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, Ron Vitiello, yanked.

The sprawling agency charged with defending the nation at home does not have Senate-confirmed officials in the roles of secretary, deputy secretary, ICE chief, Secret Service director or inspector general. When Kevin McAleenan, who has been tapped to take over Nielsen's job on a temporary basis, moves into his new digs, there won't be a Senate-confirmed leader at Customs and Border Protection, either.
