President Donald Trump’s administration settled two class action lawsuits filed by conservative “Tea Party” groups alleging former President Barack Obama’s Department of Justice discriminated against them due to their ideological commitments.

The DOJ reached an undisclosed monetary settlement with over 400 conservative groups that had their applications for tax exempt status delayed “based solely on their viewpoint or ideology,” Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced Thursday.

“The [Internal Revenue Service]’s use of these criteria as a basis for heightened scrutiny was wrong and should never have occurred,” Sessions said in a statement Thursday. “It is improper for the IRS to single out groups for different treatment based on their names or ideological positions.”

Not to hijack the thread, but in the research I did for writing my alternate history series, I ran across an interesting twist on tax collecting.

The King had an engraver who served as a minter of money.

They changed the design of the coins every year, and the previous year's coins became no good.

You had to take them in to the minter every year to exchange them for the new ones.

And the minters deducted a percentage of the gross weight/value of your coins in the exchange.

Yes!  It's a huge priority for us to get some kind of fair or flat tax enacted.  I like Ted Cruz' plan.

There is no indication the amount to be paid is reflected in the level of damage.  Class Actions rarely are, that's why people usually get checks like 47 cents from a multi-million dollar suit.  As a taxpayer, I want to know how big the checks are going out, and how much the lawyers are skimming off the top.

Secondly, has anybody determined how much damage to the clients was caused by donations that dried up from lack of IRS designation?

That can never be determined, but what we know is that they hurt conservatives, especially tea party groups, which never should have happened.

I don't know how they can possibly reimburse these groups for the damage but it's encouraging that they have been ordered to.

I'm not gonna spend a lot of time worry where the money comes from.  In comparison to what they spend on utter crap, it will be a drop in the bucket.
