Senate Conservatives Fund targets McCain

By Ben Kamisar

The Senate Conservatives Fund (SCF) has launched an effort to defeat Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), bashing him for failing to uphold the principles of a “true conservative” just hours after he announced his intention to run for reelection.

“There are few Republicans who have betrayed our conservative principles more than John McCain,” SCF President Ken Cuccinelli said in an email to supporters Tuesday of the party's 2008 nominee for president.

“John McCain lost his way a long time ago and it's time to replace him with a strong conservative leader who will support and defend the Constitution.”

Cuccinelli’s email links to a petition to replace McCain, which, as of 2 p.m. ET, has 457 signatures. He slams McCain for high-profile instances where he crossed the aisle, including helping to forge the bipartisan Senate immigration bill, as well as voting for various fiscal cliff and debt limit deals.

McCain is set to announce his decision to run again during a speech at an Arizona Chamber of Commerce luncheon in Phoenix. He teased the decision in an interview with NBC News posted late Monday night.

"I'm ready. I am more than ready. In some ways, I am eager,” he told NBC’s Kelly O’Donnell. “I think I have the knowledge and background to help the nation through very perilous times, and I believe that I can still contribute in many ways to the welfare and benefit of my state.”

The SCF isn’t the first conservative group to target McCain. The president of the Club for Growth said the group might support a primary challenger to the five-term senator. And Reps. David Schweikert and Matt Salmon (R-Ariz.) both told The Hill in February that they’re eyeing a bid to unseat McCain.

McCain was once the standard-bearer of the party during his run for president. He struggled at times with the party’s base during the primaries, mainly over his immigration position.

Since the election, he’s remained a prominent voice within the party, specifically on foreign policy issues. He now serves as the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

I have little use for John McCain.  He can always be counted on to disappoint.
However, I would not expend funds to unseat him.
On the flip side, I would not spend a dime to support him.
Cuch is ill advised here.  .

I don't necessarily see it as an attack. To me it seems more an expression of a desire for change within the party and also of an impatience with the status quo. Perfectly normal reaction given who's in the White House and how ineffective GOP leadership has been challenging Obama's whacked out agenda. Obama's been running circles around leadership.

Good to see Cucinelli lands permanent employment in the professional "non-establishment" wing of the GOP. There is irony in that.

And I hope I'm not alone, seeing more irony of him giving political advice to others. He blew a sure win situation.

As far as McCain, I saw that movie last time, where "true conservatives" vowed to unseat him; all but swore he'd lose badly, and then the ordinary people reelected him, nevertheless. I guess the voters did not have the litmus test spreadsheets from the political junkies.

It is like last November is lost from memories, as if it didn't happen.

I love all these people claiming to be anti-establishment while being an active part of the establishment.

It's kind of like John Kerry talking smack about the white privileges of the top 1% of earners and the evils of economic inequality then giving his wife a hug and a kiss.

If they really wanted to be that anti establishment candidate they they claim to be, they should leave the GOP and run against the GOP from the outside instead of from the inside and with GOP monies.

You know, "these people" are just part of the GOP's Big Tent.  Remember that?  When they were encouraging diverse people to come and be part of the big tent?  I guess the downside of that is that you have a group of people that don't always see eye-to-eye on everything.  Some of them just might challenge the old way of doing things.  Doesn't mean they have to leave the tent, does it?

Yes, but now they're IN the tent enjoying the Cucumber sandwiches and mimosas while trying to kick their hosts out.

P.S. They don't have to leave the tent, but they should learn manners and not call others names.

Agree about the manners and calling names, but it's a two-way street Luis.

Thanks, I'll fix it.

They run as Republicans by trashing Republicans and the GOP in general, which is coincidentally the same exact thing that Democrats do.

They haven't replaced one single theoretical plank in that alleged rotting house..they say that they will, but they haven't.

Talk is cheap, but it does get votes and donations.

Well, I hope they keep trying.  Change is needed.

Here's what I know beyond the shadow of a doubt.

When your strongest argument on your own worth comes from tearing another person down, you have no argument.

When you spend time talking about how bad things are, how good they use to be, and who you blame for the way things are, without offering very specific details on not only how you will correct them but also how you intend to secure sufficient support from those whose support you'll need, even if they include those whom you have maligned along the way, you're just talking, and talk is cheap.

This article is about how Senate conservatives want to defeat John McCain.

It seems that these Senate conservatives have very little respect for the people of Arizona, they who have elected McCain to five terms in office, and for the principle of Federalism implied by that fact.

So these conservatives who are sitting in the Senate planning and conspiring ways to impact a State senatorial election are very much the central planning, government by committee, Federal-government-knows-best actors that they claim to detest.

They claim to hate the establishment while trying to become the establishment.

Ronald Reagan did things that this crew couldn't imagine possible, and maybe even couldn't imagine at all, without ever once impugning a single Republican.
