Red table wine from Portugal.  $3.98 at Bottle King.  As good as the expensive foo-foo wines with the quirky labels.  (So I'm a cheap date, but the wine's still good)

Try the Layer Cake line.  There's a Cab, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, and Zinfandel.

Estancia makes a good Cabernet, as does Silverado Vineyards.

I drink whites only rarely, and I my favorite there is Clos du Bois.

For white, I've grown fond of Due Uve ("two grapes") which is a really nice blend of Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc grapes.  I can get it here for 14.99 a bottle--the link here shows it for 25 bucks, but I've never seen it for that much around here.  Its a really nice, non-headachy wine.

I just had a nice Pinor Noir recently-Wild Horse-which I have since given as a birthday gift.  It runs here about 18-19 bucks a bottle.  Just excellent though, not as heavy and full-bodied as a Cabernet.  Nice in summer!

Okay, one more favorite that you can only get by delivery:  Sattui Family Red.  I go in with other folks in my condo community-divvying up a case once in awhile.

Okay, and for volume, the Black Box brand of boxed wines is actually very good.

I'll second the Estancia - I don't drink wine regularly, but a friend got me a bottle & I really enjoyed it.

I like Kendall Jackson's cab.  It's now about $20-$22.

J.Lohr also has a nice dry cab for about the same price range.

If price were no object, I'd like a Pommard cab.

I haven't tried the Layer Cake.. I had a Cakebread chard a while back, but not enough to spend money on it.

Estancia and Silverado, I have not tried either.. I will make a note on those! I love Cabs!

If any of you live near a Total Wine store a brand they carry exclusively is Cardiff, at least out here it is.. It is very inexpensive, maybe $7-10 a bottle. The Cab is quite good, especially for a big  party and no headaches.

Another good wine is Avenel cab, it runs between $27-32 a bottle depending on the store.

A good white is the Louis Jadot 2008 Pouilly Fuisse.

I am getting off topic though..LOL

I love trying different wines so that is why I want to hear what everyone likes....

I forgot about J. Lohr!   They have a wonderful Chardonnay too--I can find it here for around 11 bucks, but it tastes like a higher level version.  I'm not big on Chardonnay for the most part though.  It hits me too hard, and with too much of a headache.

I know this is about wine, but I picked up some rather nice (albeit stronger) libations while cruising the Caribbean two weeks ago...I highly recommend either to those with discerning tastes:

Yes...I am partial to rum.

Then, I ran across this odd ball, and I've become a fan.

I like Relax Riesling a lot. I just had some the other night.

Off topic but I have to ask, since you might know.. Luis what do you think of the new Walmart meat commercials? Are they kidding, or is it really better quality?

I picked up an albeit stronger libation while cruising Johnston County.  An odd ball name:  Night Train Express
The only problem is it may be 20% alcohol (depending on the vintage) and may leave you like this:

Off topic but I have to ask, since you might know.. Luis what do you think of the new Walmart meat commercials? Are they kidding, or is it really better quality?

I've seen those, and my mind always goes to the same place...better quality than what exactly?

Walmart does NOT sell Prime beef, and I haven't spotted any Black Angus, or Natural Angus in their display cases. Having said that, 80% of all cattle slaughtered in the US are slaughtered by four companies, output @26 billion lbs of beef annually.

There are four grades of beef in the US: prime, choice, select, and standard, and some beef companies choose to NOT have their beef graded, and that is sold as ungraded or no-roll; no-roll because when a side of beef is graded by a USDA inspector, they mark the grade of the side by rolling an ink stamp down the length of it.

No, each grade has internal grading according to the marbling of the cut (streaks of fat within the meat), so a Prime+ cut is the best.

Once you get beyond all that, there is the aging of the beef; overall, the American palate prefers a cut of meat that is at least 11 days past slaughter, aged in a sealed plastic which both allows for purge (blood letting) and uses the very same purge to maintain tenderness and assists in the aging.

We usually hold our beef fourteen days past slaughter date before we start selling it. Fine restaurants add their own dry aging of the beef, and maintain it in a cool, closely watched meat storage locker for up to 30 days, adding extra tenderness, and flavor via controlled spoilage.

Prior to cutting the beef above, the butcher will scrape off all the mold.

Having said all that, the single most critical aspect of the whole thing is the actual cutting of the steaks, since cutting against the grain and making other simple mistake will render the best piece of meat inedible.

Walmart sells Select beef (I haven't spotted any choice) and I can SEE horrific errors in the actual cuts, so I've never purchased a steak there.

Meat that one buys for for things like pot roast and stir fry and such appear to be OK.

I hope I didn't get too wordy.

OH my goodness.   That looks wonderful!

It is wonderful. Specially after dinner.

My 80 year-old mother has taken to keeping a bottle safely tucked away in the back of the fridge to ward off the "night chills".

It must be chilly as Hell in South Miami, 'cause Dad is bringing home about two bottles a week of the stuff...three if my Aunt happens to stop by for a visit.

It's like Bailey's, but with a good French Cabernet and Dutch chocolate mixed in.

It comes in several flavors.

I don't generally like champagne.

I don't like sparkling water either, and there's probably a connection there.

The only champagne that I have ever tried and liked is Louis Roederer Cristal...but who the Hell can afford that?

I had a couple of bottles of different 2006 Washington State Merlots in the wine locker and the Missus has been enjoying them immensely.  We popped one called "The Velvet Devil" last night and it was incredibly smooth with an amazing nose.

Our area of the US is at the same latitude as some of the best wine country in Europe, and for the past several years we buy a variety of wines (white and red) that are domestic and locally produced.  There are thousands of small vineyards around the Pacific Northwest and we have yet to find a bad label out here....

I like white wine, I'm probably unsophisticated. My favorite is Pinot Grigio.

Pinot is good depending on the brand. I prefer it to Chard!
