The Economy Unexpectedly Shed 23,000 Jobs in July—Yet Unemployment Fell to 4.1

John Carney 7 Aug 2026

The U.S. economy shed jobs in July even while the unemployment rate fell.

Payrolls across the American economy contracted by 23,000 jobs in July and the unemployment rate ticked down to 4.1 percent. The public sector’s payrolls fell sharply, and the services sector hiring was soft, with a large contraction in retail and leisure. The goods-producing side of the economy, however, saw a solid expansion, with both construction and durable goods manufacturing expanding at a rapid pace.

Economists had forecast the economy would add 88,000 jobs and predicted the unemployment rate would hold steady at 4.2 percent. None of the economists surveyed by Econoday predicted a negative figure for the month.

The revisions to prior months suggest job growth was softer than previously thought. The May estimate was revised down by 66,000 to 63,000 added jobs. The June estimate was revised down by 37,000 to just 20,000. Combined, these indicate the economy had 103,000 fewer jobs than previously estimated.

The private sector added 30,000 jobs.  The public sector lost 53,000, driven by a nearly 50,000 decline in state and local educational jobs.

Construction was a major source of the private sector’s gains, adding 22,000 jobs. Manufacturing added 5,000, split between a strong gain of 18,000 in durable goods and a loss of 13,000 in nondurable manufacturing.

These trends all bode good for our country as the leeches are being reduced and solid construction and manufacturing return with lessened illegals taking those jobs.

Only on TBR can folks put lipstick on this pig

Sluggish jobs market, rising prices, a war that, although we may not be losing, we sure as hell aren’t winning and that’s expanding, , a debt that’s increasing, a president that has an approval in the 30s and that’s in the 20s when it comes to the economy and cost of living, and Democrats poised to sweep this fall

Many here still think this is all fine and dandy :silly:

Is it the same mindset that brought victory to the Democrats in 2006 and again in 2008

Trump #47 is still better than Biden ... for now.

On the bright side, the GOP marginally holds the US Senate as long as Mitch McConnell's death certificate remains lost in the mail.

@LMAO I'll just speak for myself here and not for TBR as you mentioned.  No, I don't think things are all wonderful and shiny.  Things are an absolute mess, and socialism is taking hold, in cities, like Minneapolis (Little Somalia).  This uprising is due to the attacks on Iran and Israel be damned as well.

True or not Trump was sold on the idea that we would be in and out of Iran within weeks and the reason we bombed Iran was to diminish their nuclear capabilities.  Obviously, whoever whispered in his ear was wrong.

We have enemies within this country that are growing and the Muslim Brotherhood is alive and well.

The upcoming midterms will determine whether or not socialism tightens its stranglehold on this country.

Say what you want, laugh, cheer that things aren't going well, but I'm hoping and praying that this administration is able to resolve some of the economic and geopolitical issues that we are faced with.

We are in a different type of mess than Joe had us in, but for now the borders are secure.  The economy continues to struggle.

We are in times when Americans should be pulling together to stifle socialism not relish in the fact that all things Trump aren't going so well.

The dangers of any kind of socialism is not going  happen with this midterm. Government will be too divided.

But if the Democrats maintain their momentum going  into the presidential election year in 2028, then look out

Regardless of the time frame, again, right now we are in times when Americans both Democrat and Republican should be pulling together to stifle socialism and not relish in the fact that all things Trump aren't going so well.

The country is being primed for socialism by a failed second term.  Maybe the public doesn’t truly want the radical policies any more than they clamored for a war in Iran, but they get both because of the duopoly.

Jobs Report Shows Nearly One Million Fewer Born Foreign Born Men in U.S. Labor Force

The American workforce has fewer foreign born workers, especially foreign men, than it did a year ago, reflecting the Trump administration’s efforts to enforce U.S. immigration laws and crack down on illegal entry. The foreign-born population overall fell by 401,000  to 48.1 million over the past year. The number of foreigners in the labor force declined by 550,000 to 31.5 million. Employment fell by 278,000 to around 30.5 million.

The declines came entirely from a drop in foreign-born men. The population fell by 819,000 to 22.8 million. The number of foreign-born men in the labor force fell by 962,000 to 17.3 million, and their participation rate fell to 76.1 percent from 77.5 percent. The number of foreign men holding jobs fell by 752,000 to 16.8 million.

The population of foreign-born women increased by around 418,000, with a similar increase in the labor force. The number of foreign-born women with jobs rose by 474,000.

The replies show mostly that the article is not read as your comments have little to do with what was reported.

The article is about job growth, no Iran, not Islam, not socialism and not Trump.

It is about the economy and paints a bright future in this area.

Why not concentrate on that rather than all the woefulness you plant?

Go put all that crap in another thread.

Jobless Claims Stay Under 200,000 for Third Straight Week First Time in 57 Years
by Jazz Hostetler  August 7, 2026

The numbers just dropped, and they are the kind that should make every American who still believes in work sit up straight.

New filings for unemployment benefits came in at 199,000 last week. That is up a mere 1,000 from the prior week’s revised 198,000, and better than the 201,000 the so-called experts expected. More important, it marks the third consecutive week below 200,000. The last time that happened was 1969.

Fifty-seven years. Let that sink in.

This is actually an encouraging report.  Basically public sectors are shedding jobs (reducing government) and the private sector appears to be adding solid manufacturing and construction jobs, which is what we want to see as we invest in rebuilding our industrial and manufacturing base.

Also more foreign born workers are exiting the labor force (which I assume is a result of forced and voluntary deportation efforts primarily).  Meaning that more jobs are being filled by native American workers.

Shows good progress toward an important part of what we voted for.  The pace isn't what many wanted to see, but it does take time to affect these types of changes.  Let's hope that it keeps moving in the right direction!

Average hourly earnings rose by 0.1 percent compared with June, below estimates for a 0.3 percent gain. Over the past 12 months, average hourly earnings are up 3.2 percent. The average workweek was unchanged at 34.3 hours. These figures suggest that there is very little inflationary pressure from the labor market.

The loss of jobs in retail and leisure may partly reflect the end of the World Cup, with businesses paring back payrolls after hiring up to serve surging demand related to the international sports tournament.

The U.S. labor market has experienced a significant shift away from dependence on an immigration-driven workforce. Jobs numbers that may seem anemic compared with recent years may actually indicate healthy—even robust—growth under current conditions, according to economists.
