Navy awards $76.6 billion for Virginia, Columbia-class submarines

The U.S. Navy announced that it is awarding contracts for another round of ballistic missile and fast-attack submarines.

The Defense Department is granting a collective $76.6 billion to General Dynamics Electric Boat for five Columbia-class submarines and to both General Dynamics Electric Boat and Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding for nine Virginia-class submarines to be built in the coming years.


“This historic investment underscores the department’s continued commitment to undersea superiority and the recapitalization of our nuclear triad,” said Vice Adm. Robert Gaucher, director of submarine programs. “By securing the continuous production of both the Columbia and Virginia classes, we ensure we will continue to deliver the world’s most lethal, survivable and resilient combat platform.”

The contract includes $29.5 billion for Columbia-class Build II submarines, $42.1 billion for Virginia-class Block VI submarines and $5 billion for investments in nuclear shipbuilding programs and shipbuilding infrastructure for both shipbuilders.

$76.6 billion for the subs and a few million for multi-million dollar missiles and torpedoes. Just enough to look cool and go one missions, but nothing for a full scale war where lots of ammo would crash the budget.

According to Hegseth we have sufficient 'firepower' and  there is "no shortage of munitions".

""We're building more than ever before," Hegseth said. "The Biden administration gave away hundreds of billions to Ukraine, and so President Trump had to refill, and he has, and we have, in real time."

Hegseth's comments came after he was asked by Brennan about Ukrainian President Volodymy Zelenskyy's request to produce Patriot missiles.

"Nobody makes better and more munitions than the United States of America, and we are open to co-production wherever we can," Hegseth said. "And because of this administration, we're supercharging our arsenal of freedom — building more, building faster, opening up the Pentagon, ripping through the Pentagon bureaucracy, to force industry to move faster."

"Our stockpiles are strong and will only get stronger in the future," he added.
