N.J. Officials: Voter Rolls on 'Honor System'

New Jersey reportedly depends on "the honor system" when it comes to voter rolls, and officials from both parties say the number of noncitizens being registered is significantly higher than Democrat Gov. Mikie Sherrill recently disclosed.
A Politico report found that election officials, campaign operatives, and lawmakers from both parties believe New Jersey's voter registration system contains longstanding flaws.
Those flaws include the 6,600 noncitizens who Sherrill said were mistakenly added to the voter rolls because of a Motor Vehicle Commission software error between June 2023 and June 2024.
The issue has intensified the Trump administration's push for stronger election integrity measures and added fuel to the debate over voter identification and citizenship verification.
