Majorca Daily BulletinThe family of US billionaire James ‘Fergie’ Cox Chambers Jr., who was arrested in Ibiza at the request of the United States, claimed on Monday that his extradition is the result of “political persecution” by the Trump administration due to the philanthropist’s support for the Palestinian cause.
The family has therefore called for action to be taken against his handover to the US authorities.
In a statement sent to EFE, the family reported that Chambers was arrested last Friday in Ibiza by the National Police in the street, whilst he was with his family, in response to an extradition request made by the US Department of Justice.
A court on the island ordered his remand in custody, a decision which will be reviewed at a hearing scheduled for this Thursday, 16 July. His relatives maintain that the actions of President Donald Trump’s administration form part of a strategy of repression against the international solidarity movement with Palestine, and they state that the businessman is facing an extradition request on several federal charges that could result in a sentence of up to 30 years’ imprisonment.
According to the family, the most serious charge relates to alleged funding of the Palestinian resistance, an accusation they describe as “fabricated” and which, they claim, is based solely on fund transfers made by Chambers from the United States to Tunisia, the country where he resided and where he carried out business and sports sponsorship activities.
The statement highlights that in 2023 Chambers received around 250 million dollars after selling his stake in the Cox Enterprises group and severing his ties with the family fortune, subsequently channelling those funds, according to those close to him, into projects relating to social activism, international solidarity and humanitarian aid. ...
