Army Sharpens Command-and-Control Capabilities

Wed, 07/08/2026 - 08:57
Next-Generation Command and Control will give commanders and their troops a leg up in the future fight, Army leaders said during a recent "State of Defense 2026” webinar hosted by Defense One.

The initiative, which is being prototyped by soldiers with the 4th Infantry Division at Fort Carson, Colorado, and the 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, “gives our commanders the ability to conduct all the warfighting functions and enables all of their soldiers to do so in an interconnected environment, fully digitally,” said Joseph Welch, portfolio acquisition executive for command and control and counter-command and control.

Through the program, also known as Next-Gen C2, troops will be able to “seamlessly share information over a range of different networks” even as they move around through a “digital, “interconnected environment,” Welch said.

The Army is looking to make command-and-control more portable as its Next-Gen C2 divisions receive new vehicles and weapon systems, said Maj. Gen. James Bartholomees, commanding general of the 25th Infantry Division.
