Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) died suddenly, his office announced early on Sunday morning in an X post.

"On the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness,” the statement read.

“Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period,” his office continued.

The 71-year-old was a close ally of President Donald Trump and chair of the powerful Senate Budget Committee. Graham has been in the United States Senate since 2003, and he previously served in the House of Representatives.

Cardiac arrest.  Just dropped dead, like Andrew Breitbart did.  He was in Kyiv on Friday, so I hope the FBI does a full autopsy with laboratory analysis to make sure that the Russians didn't get him with one of their "sudden death" poison techniques.  I've always been suspicious of coincidental sudden deaths for public figures like Breitbart, but then again, I've had several family members and old school buddies just fall over and die instantly from heart attacks, in mid-conversation with whoever was present at the time.  And I've seen it happen twice myself to guys just out having a nice day with friends or at church.

President Trump on Sunday paid tribute to Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), calling his longtime ally who died unexpectedly the night before a “true American Patriot.”

“Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead!” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!”

Graham’s office said the senator died following a “brief and sudden illness” on Saturday evening. Trump and the senator were longtime allies, though both were rivals during the 2016 Republican presidential primary election.

Graham warned in May 2016 that if Trump became the nominee, Republicans “will get destroyed…….and we will deserve it,” he wrote on Twitter, now the social platform X.

They do have a reputation for using exotic poisons that are difficult to detect and mimic "natural" causes of death.

DVT would be an obvious suspected cause, but also a convenient cover for an assassination by poison.

With CPR, defibrillators, etc., many people survive cardiac arrest ... unless he had an undiagnosed or undisclosed pre-existing condition ... or was unattended for a length of time.

There are known steps to mitigate risks of DVT, unless he couldn't take aspirin because he was already on blood thinners.

71 is young these days.  "Sudden death" after just returning from Ukraine sounds so Putin.

Sen. Lindsey Graham's sudden death on Sunday leaves a major vacancy in the Republican majority, and it will fall to South Carolina's governor to fill that seat in the short term.

Gov. Henry McMaster, a Republican, has the responsibility to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of Graham's term, which is set to end in 2027.

Graham's seat is up for re-election this year, however, and he had already won the Republican primary for the race prior to his death. Under South Carolina law, the race will now allow for a special primary election for Republican candidates.

A filing window will open July 21 and close on July 28, followed by a special primary election on August 11 and another runoff election on August 25 if necessary. The winner of that primary will then face the Democratic opponent as normal in the November election.

As of Sunday morning, McMaster has made no announcements about who he intends to appoint to the seat. The appointment would likely be an advantage for any candidate looking to run to replace Graham in November.

I love a good conspiracy as much as the next Briefer, but the circumstances on this one doesn't play.   Sleuth murders like Brietbart appear circumstance, not  blaring like a bull horn at 100 decibels.   (day after Ukraine Visit?).

I think the Briefer who earlier cited a DVT clot, stroke, or heart attack nailed.  Those things happen. 

Which reminds me a a helpful hint to us elderly Briefers.....   When I travel, I make sure to take an extra 325mg Aspirin.  No proof that prevents, but it sure isn't hurting.

FBI is ‘assisting’ police after 71-year-old Lindsey Graham’s mysterious death one day after secret Ukraine trip and chilling Iran ‘murder plot’

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has stepped in to 'assist' local authorities in the wake of Lindsey Graham's unexpected death, adding to mounting skepticism surrounding the US Senator's sudden passing at 71. 

The office of Graham, who had represented South Carolina since 2002, announced in the early hours of Sunday that the senator had 'passed away from a brief and sudden illness.'

A 911 call for 'cardiac arrest' was placed from Graham's residence around 8.30pm, but no official cause of death has been confirmed, according to multiple reports.
FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X on Sunday morning that the agency was 'assisting local authorities and has made every necessary resource available.'

Graham was a vocal supporter of US involvement in conflicts abroad, including both the Russia-Ukraine war and the Iran clashes.

Amidst the July 4th recess break in Washington, DC this past week, Graham travelled to Ukraine, met with President Volodymyr Zelensky, and even visited a drone facility which was later destroyed by the Russians.

Graham has also been targeted by Iranian leaders. An Iranian State TV host noted in a Sunday broadcast that she congratulated 'the Iranian people on the death U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, who has been sent to hell.'

Political commentators, liberal and conservative alike, have stepped up with their own theories about Graham's cause of death.
