Mitch McConnell will not vote in the Senate this week as recovery continues

He is 'working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery,' the spokesperson says

By Alex Nitzberg Fox News
Published June 23, 2026 1:45pm EDT

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is continuing to recover and will not vote this week, spokesman David Popp said.

"Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week," he said in a statement.

McConnell was hospitalized earlier this month, though the reason has not been disclosed.

Fox News Digital reached out to request more information on Tuesday, but Popp did not provide any additional details regarding the senator's situation.

McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, was hospitalized for eight days earlier this year after experiencing "flu-like symptoms."

The long-serving lawmaker has been in office since early 1985.

Strap his butt to a gurney and wheel him in for a vote.  Then call a Somali hospice to come pick him up.

I doubt he ever votes again.  He's like McStain...stays when he knows his days are numbered, he votes against us several times, then cashes out before the term for which he shouldn't have run ends.  True Democrat form!

On a totally unrelated note: In Kentucky, Senators who die in office can only be replaced via special election. Unlike many other states, the Governor there has no power to appoint an interim replacement.

Under House Bill 622, enacted in 2024, Kentucky law mandates that any vacancy in the U.S. Senate be filled by a special election, completely stripping the governor of appointment authority.

This represents a significant change from previous protocols. In 2021, Senate Bill 228 required the governor to choose an interim appointee from a list of three candidates provided by the departing senator's political party, but the 2024 legislation removed the governor from the process entirely to align Senate vacancies with the special election process used for Congressional seats.  Kentucky is now one of only five states that require a special election rather than allowing gubernatorial appointment.

McConnell was found 'unconscious' in home last month as condition remains unknown
Senate Majority Leader John Thune says the retiring Kentucky senator remains 'dialed in' despite his ongoing recovery
By Alex Miller Fox News
Published July 1, 2026 6:09pm EDT

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was reportedly found "unconscious" in his Washington, D.C. home last month before being taken to the hospital, as his condition and timetable to return to the Senate remain a mystery.

Audio from an emergency dispatch from a call on June 14, the day McConnell was sent to the hospital, released Wednesday by reporter Desirée Townsend and later reported by PunchBowl News revealed that the longtime Senate Republican was "unconscious," and that the dispatcher requested an Advanced Life Support (ALS) response.

McConnell, 82, has been absent from the Senate ever since, and it is unclear when he will return. His office did not return a request for comment on his condition, why he was hospitalized and when he would return to the upper chamber.

The day of McConnell’s hospitalization, his office released that the lawmaker "was admitted to the hospital this morning" and was "receiving excellent care." David Popp, his spokesperson, later said that McConnell was "working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery."

Senate Republican leadership said they had spoken with McConnell after the incident, too.

so Mitch really did have a heart attack. It's just as well they need a special election to replace him (way past due), seeing as Beshear would make the call.

And this, boys and girls, is what is wrong with Washington.  Mitch believes his vote is his own personal property, and not something that belongs to the Commonwealth of Kentucky.  Most people retire long before reaching the age of 82, handing off their workplace duties to the next generation.  But not politicians.  Their entire existence is tied up in the power they accumulate with our tax dollars.  So to hell with the people of Kentucky.  Your Commonwealth will simply have to go without half its representation, all because Mitch McConnell refuses to turn in his Club Membership Keys.

Kentucky's rules for Senate vacancies:No Appointed Replacements: The governor cannot appoint a temporary replacement to serve out the remainder of the term.Special Elections: When a vacancy occurs due to death, resignation, or expulsion, the state provides an expedited special election process so that voters can decide who fills the seat

With the looming midterms already including a replacement for McConnell, it may be best to just leave McConnell where he is .... out on sick leave working closely with his staff.

Quote
House Bill 622 repealed KRS 63.200 and replaced Kentucky's Senate vacancy process with a special election system. Under the revised law, the governor must issue a proclamation calling an election, with the winner serving the remainder of the unexpired term. The legislation also established administrative deadlines for notices and candidate filings tied to that election.

The statute specifies that a Senate vacancy is filled through an election and lays out filing and notice requirements. It does not, however, explicitly spell out how a vacancy occurring late in an election year would interact with a Senate race that is already on the ballot.

That omission has become relevant because McConnell's seat is already being contested in the 2026 election. Kentucky voters are set to elect someone to a new six-year term in November regardless of whether McConnell completes his current term.

The law therefore answers one question—there is no gubernatorial appointment—but leaves other questions unresolved, including how election officials would administer a vacancy occurring close to the end of the senator's term.

IMO, the best course of action remains the repeal of the 17th Amendment.  Since a Senator represents the state, the state should select who its representativecan should be and when to replace an existing Senator.

According to https://radaronline.com/p/mitch-mcconnellhealth-concerns-senator-remains-hospitalized-unconscious/

Another asked, "Is Mitch McConnell deceased?" and one conspiracy theorist added, "Sen. Mitch McConnell has been hospitalized since mid-June after being found unconscious (EMS reported cardiac arrest). His office says he's improving and working remotely, but no recent proof of life or details have been released."

If he was not conscious and his heart was not beating when EMS arrived, that does not bode well for his current condition.

John Thune reported earlier that he visited McConnell in the hospital and that he was responsive.  His chief of staff reported that he was actively following Senate business from his hospital bed.  I think someone may be lying here.

Do you mean to tell me that my tax dollars have been used to keep him on life support in ICU for three weeks when he has zero chance of recovery?  All while his fellow politicians and staff have been lying this whole time?

Can you imagine the cost of that hospital bill?

I'd like to see something confirmed, not just a Loomer tweet. Not that I doubt this report, mind you.

Exactly. I've been saying for weeks that life support is the only thing keeping him "alive", but Loomer isn't exactly a good source for that confirmation.

MAGA demands Mitch McConnell 'proof of life' as wild rumor sweeps DC amid three-week hospitalization

By PHILLIP NIETO, US POLITICAL REPORTER

Published: 09:05 EDT, 7 July 2026 | Updated: 09:36 EDT, 7 July 2026

Donald Trump's most vocal supporters are demanding that Mitch McConnell's office provide proof that the Kentucky lawmaker is still alive after he disappeared amid a three-week hospitalization.

McConnell, 84, was admitted to a hospital on the morning of June 14 following a medical emergency at his Washington, DC home. Paramedics responded to a report of an unconscious person believed to have suffered a 'cardiac arrest,' with a medic reporting 'CPR in progress' at the address.

The senator was not named on the call, and his office has never confirmed what sent him to the hospital, saying only that he is receiving 'excellent care.'

The speculation surrounding McConnell has intensified in recent days because his aides have refused to release new information regarding his condition or whether he will return to work as the GOP fights to maintain their razor thin majority.

Trump conspiracy theorist Laura Loomer claimed that an unnamed White House source told her that McConnell is in a 'vegetative state' or 'brain dead' and is 'not coming back' to work.

DC outlet The Hill even accidentally published an obituary of the senator which was swiftly deleted. A screenshot spread on X, and a copy reportedly stayed live on Yahoo News.

Independent journalist Desirée Townsend confirmed Loomer's allegations: 'I have heard the same thing from my sources for days. At this point, I am at the hospital for when they eventually decide to cut him off of life support and move his body.'

As online chatter continued to grow about McConnell's health condition, MAGA activists like Breitbart editor Matthew Boyle wrote on X, 'McConnell’s staff should produce proof of the senator’s condition one way or another right now.'

Loomer tweet plus family silence are the two things impacting this story right now.
