Mitch McConnell will not vote in the Senate this week as recovery continues

He is 'working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery,' the spokesperson says

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is continuing to recover and will not vote this week, spokesman David Popp said.

"Senator McConnell is still working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery. However, he will not be voting this week," he said in a statement.

McConnell was hospitalized earlier this month, though the reason has not been disclosed.

Fox News Digital reached out to request more information on Tuesday, but Popp did not provide any additional details regarding the senator's situation.

McConnell, the longest-serving Senate party leader in U.S. history, was hospitalized for eight days earlier this year after experiencing "flu-like symptoms."

The long-serving lawmaker has been in office since early 1985.

Strap his butt to a gurney and wheel him in for a vote.  Then call a Somali hospice to come pick him up.

I doubt he ever votes again.  He's like McStain...stays when he knows his days are numbered, he votes against us several times, then cashes out before the term for which he shouldn't have run ends.  True Democrat form!

On a totally unrelated note: In Kentucky, Senators who die in office can only be replaced via special election. Unlike many other states, the Governor there has no power to appoint an interim replacement.

Under House Bill 622, enacted in 2024, Kentucky law mandates that any vacancy in the U.S. Senate be filled by a special election, completely stripping the governor of appointment authority.

This represents a significant change from previous protocols. In 2021, Senate Bill 228 required the governor to choose an interim appointee from a list of three candidates provided by the departing senator's political party, but the 2024 legislation removed the governor from the process entirely to align Senate vacancies with the special election process used for Congressional seats.  Kentucky is now one of only five states that require a special election rather than allowing gubernatorial appointment.

No.  Swimmer Kennedy and John McStain didn't.

McConnell was found 'unconscious' in home last month as condition remains unknown
Senate Majority Leader John Thune says the retiring Kentucky senator remains 'dialed in' despite his ongoing recovery
By Alex Miller Fox News
Published July 1, 2026 6:09pm EDT

Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., was reportedly found "unconscious" in his Washington, D.C. home last month before being taken to the hospital, as his condition and timetable to return to the Senate remain a mystery.

Audio from an emergency dispatch from a call on June 14, the day McConnell was sent to the hospital, released Wednesday by reporter Desirée Townsend and later reported by PunchBowl News revealed that the longtime Senate Republican was "unconscious," and that the dispatcher requested an Advanced Life Support (ALS) response.

McConnell, 82, has been absent from the Senate ever since, and it is unclear when he will return. His office did not return a request for comment on his condition, why he was hospitalized and when he would return to the upper chamber.

The day of McConnell’s hospitalization, his office released that the lawmaker "was admitted to the hospital this morning" and was "receiving excellent care." David Popp, his spokesperson, later said that McConnell was "working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery."

Senate Republican leadership said they had spoken with McConnell after the incident, too.

Kentucky has a Dem Governor....but

Kentucky's rules for Senate vacancies:No Appointed Replacements: The governor cannot appoint a temporary replacement to serve out the remainder of the term.Special Elections: When a vacancy occurs due to death, resignation, or expulsion, the state provides an expedited special election process so that voters can decide who fills the seat

so Mitch really did have a heart attack. It's just as well they need a special election to replace him (way past due), seeing as Beshear would make the call.
