Anyone Using Fedora?
« on: Monday, Jun 15, 2026 03:30 pm »
Just curious.  I previously used Mint linux on another box I converted from Win to *nix, which was a fairly windows-like experience.  This time - new recycled box - I thought I'd give Fedora linux a try.

It's a little less windows-like, but still pretty easy to find my way around.  One nice thing is that I find I'm becoming more comfortable working my way around in the CLI rather than the graphical window interface.

What different flavors of *nix have you used in the past, and what were your thoughts about it?

I converted an old W10 box to Mint and love it but I can't get entirely away from W11 because my genealogy software won't run on Unix.

There's always something, isn't there?

I did like Mint - it was a graceful way to start weaning myself away from Windows.

Mandrake
Red Hat
Slack
BSD
Debian
Ubuntu
Mint

I have been on Fedora before too - though not long enough to call it on the list. Just not a KDE fan. Always been a Gnome guy. Red Hat derivatives tend to use KDE by default. Now I know I could have installled Gnome instead on any of them, but I tend to go with defaults until I am comfortable.

There were others... I carried knoppix for years and years... Long before anything else, Knoppix was a bootable live CD favored by pooter techs for diag and file recovery jobs.

Lindows, Dragon Linux... several Windows and Linux based Linux CLIs

But mostly slack, then BSD, and Debian until the far more user-friendly UBUNTU fork came along. Been on Ubuntu or Mint ever since.

I used CentOS until IBM got their hooks in it.

If I'm going to spin up an instance of Linux, I'll try Rocky Linux first (with Gnome Desktop).  It's made by former CentOS guys, based on System V UNIX (AIX, Solaris, SCO), and attempts to maintain binary compatability with RHEL.

The RHEL Release cycle is:

Fedora > RHEL > CentOS/Rocky Linux (etc)

There is a delay between the stages as source code gets rebranded and compiled.

I tried SUSE, and it was not compatibile/comparable with the other System V UNIX/Linux flavors I work with.

The current Fedora workstation ships with Gnome desktop.
