That looks terrible. There is a huge amount of fuel required for a B-52 and one can see the result. Prayers for the crew.

A B-52 Stratofortress conducting a test mission crashed shortly after takeoff from Edwards Air Force Base in California on Monday, killing all eight people aboard, according to military officials.


The aircraft went down at approximately 11:20 a.m. local time during a flight tied to an Air Force radar modernization program. Video footage from the scene showed debris scattered across a burned section of desert near the runway as emergency crews responded to the crash site.

“An Air Force B-52 Stratofortress carrying eight people on a routine test mission crashed today after take-off at 11:20 a.m. (PDT). Initial indications are that the crash was not survivable,” the base wrote on X.


According to the Associated Press (AP), officials confirmed the bomber was carrying a mix of military personnel and government contractors. During a press briefing, Col. James Hayes, deputy commander of the 412th Test Wing, shared the devastating news that investigators found no signs of survivors.

“We lost eight great Americans,” Hayes said, noting that authorities are currently notifying the families.

The wife of one of the crew members aboard the B-52 bomber that crashed at Edwards Air Force Base in Southern California Monday, killing all eight people on board, spoke with KTLA 5 News Tuesday.

Lauren Smith, the wife of Jeromy Smith, a flight test engineer for the U.S. Air Force who died in the crash, told KTLA that the plane was experiencing issues before Monday’s flight.

“My husband told me on Friday that they were supposed to fly on Friday and that something was wrong with the plane,” Smith said. “I don’t know what was wrong, but the flight kept getting pushed back. He was supposed to fly in the morning and then it got pushed back to noon and then it got pushed back to 2 o’clock. And then they said they’re going to have to fix whatever was wrong with it and that they would fly when it was done.”

The B-52 bomber crashed shortly after takeoff at 11:20 a.m. Officials said that the crew was a mix of military personnel, government civilians and government contractors who were taking part in a local test mission related to a radar modernization program.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The B-52 that crashed during a test flight at an Air Force base in California was airborne for just over three minutes before plunging to the ground at a rate nearly 10 times faster than a plane normally descends for landing, limited tracking data shows.

All eight people aboard were killed in Monday’s fiery crash of the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress, which was taking part in a routine test mission as part of an overall program to keep the long-running aircraft flying for decades to come. It was not yet clear Tuesday what caused the plane to crash, and officials at Edwards Air Force Base said it could take up to six months to complete the investigation.

The B-52 was airborne for 3 minutes and 15 seconds, according to AirNav Systems, a flight tracking website.

Flight tracking that was available Tuesday shows the bomber turning to the northeast right after taking off and nearly completing a 180 degree turn before crashing on another runway, according to AirNav Systems. The data that comes from a system called “multilateration” doesn’t show precise altitude and speed information, but it does show the plane fell to earth at a rate of descent of 5,056 feet (1,541 meters) per minute.

The airfield remained closed Tuesday. Crews were making the crash site safe for search and recovery teams to enter, after fires flared up overnight, said Mike Paoli, a spokesperson for the 412 Test Wing at Edwards.
