We were in France in the early 2000s and stopped in a store that was the functional equivalent of a Walmart. Maybe not quite so large, but it still had just about everything you'd need. We bought cookies.

I went backpacking across Britian in the mid 80's with a group of friends for several weeks.  That was some of the worst food I've ever eaten.  We'd try to find a McDonald's so at least we could stomach the food.
