New Kindle App for PC
« on: Wednesday, Jun 03, 12:01 pm »
Has anyone else tried the new Kindle App from Amazon?

I did.
Man! What a disappointment.

They finally updated the old, kludgy, clunky app last month, which didn't really fix anything, but it did come with a notice that the old app would be discontinued at the end of June, but there would a brandy new app available at the beginning of June. Woo! So I awaited the new app with bated breath...

Expecting, perhaps, a wrapper around their exceedingly epic and enjoyable Droid app. Sadly, what I got is kinda a wrapper around their crappy and non-intuitive web app.

And to further my ire... You cant even get to all the settings in the app... they fall past the bottom of the page and you cannot scroll to them! There's a sure sign of an app not ready for prime time.

And then, And THEN, AND THEN: I went on anyway, and opened a book in it... And the thing decides to reset to the beginning of the book, losing my place... But wait! it does that about once every minute. WTF is that? How can they even think of releasing it like that? It is literally impossible to use!

So here we sit, with an unusable new app, and an old, clunky app that will be discontinued at the end of the month. What now???

🤬

I love my Kindle e-reader, but the web app is trash.  Sounds like it's even trashier now. Of course, as I understand it, the whole purpose was to close the loophole people were using to download their books thru the old web app and store them on their own devices locally .... and/or possibly upload them to the seven seas.   From that perspective, it probably is considered a success by Amazon.

Listen to ebooks using my phone in the car, use the apple app. Works good for my punishing commute.

I use the free Calibre app to read ebooks on my MacBook Pro.

There may be a Windows version of it, too.

I try to find ebooks in "epub" or "mobi" format.
PDF works as well, but often don't look as good (on the Mac, I read them with Preview).

See, I have a paperback-sized Droid tablet that I use for reading too - It has Kindle's Droid app on it, and it is a pleasure to use. If ever I am mobile, like out sitting in a waiting room at a doctor's office, I am on that, and it's great!

But I would prefer to read on the PC (laptop) when at home, because I don't have to hold the dang tablet up, and I have a better time seeing the words (font size sans cheaters).

And I don't think you're changing the quotient on banditry anyway - I can hack your Kindle just as easy as I can hack my Droid or my PC, if I had the desire. As it is, I am not. I am a very high volume reader, and I use the Kindle Unlimited service, almost exclusively, as prescribed, nearly without fail.

That is not perfectly true, because I did hack my purchased books out of their directory and converted them to EPUB - But that is simply for posterity - I prefer those books I bought to be in my own library, and unencumbered by DRM

I can't listen. Either I will fall asleep, or it will turn into white noise.
Funny that. I can read a book and listen to something while I am reading, comprehending both, but I cannot listen to a story and read something too... Weird, eh?

Get a cheap Droid this time, and put the Kindle app on that. Then you can use it for other things too. I love having a tablet.

I have Calibre - It might have been you that recommended it to me. It is the interface I use to govern my personal library. I also use it to convert books most of the time... But I don't like its reader all that much - Tho I haven't used it in a while, so maybe it has improved - I normally use Aquile (paid version) for reading in my personal library, and Kindle's app for reading in Kindle... Other than that, I also use the Libby app to access my public library, and that's it.

Yeah, yeah, I've got all that... For my laptop. 😎😁👍

I have a swing-away table tied to my easy chair (where I spend most of my days, these days)... On top of that is a laptop stand that I can adjust for height and tilt, so my laptop is always in the perfect position...

All I want different is a bluetooth finger-mouse so I don't have to lift my hands to turn the page 😊, but other than that. I'm golden.

It all tears down in seconds, btw, so I can use the table to eat my meals and whatnot, so it is a great system. 🍻

LOL, I should have assumed as much.

I love my bluetooth page turner for my Kindle.  I got it so I could keep my hands under my throw blanket, and the ring style is super convenient when I have a hot flash and have to throw that blanket off in a hurry.

Well, whatever setup you choose to use ... happy reading!

This is an unwelcome stage for tech IMO. I'm not happy about it... course i usually fubar my stuff before it happens to me. But yeah, i'd hate bricking a perfectly working machine. Doesn't sit right.

I've had my issues with Linux consumer products but this might be the niche for them, as long as it's easy to use. Or chromeos or something.

Here's the difference: A 15" monitor means no cheaters. And that's the whole enchilada.

WTF is it with a 'whole enchilada' anyway? That is not very intimidating. Maybe 'three whole enchiladas' ... Now that might be enough lunch that you might need to go home and have a siesta... But a 'whole enchilada'... That's just slightly more than a snack.

But I digress... Whatever works... 😊

Happy reading to you too.  :patriot: :seeya:

Winders ain't no better. I have what once was a top of the line MS Surface laid up next to my chair... Nice 12" tablet. works just great. Nothing wrong with it. But since it won't do Win11, it may as well be a doormat.

That is my next sojourn into Linux btw... I will fall over if it can run that thing. 😂🤣😂

A single 'whole enchilada' is plenty enough to provide sufficient heartburn, though.
And thank you.

Had a burrito bowl from chipotle tonight... it was pretty good.
